"Beautiful Danger"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

A tribute to the English Electric Lightning- the last purely British supersonic fighter. First British fighter to fly Mach 2 on Nov 25, 1958. Beautiful interceptor never saw action during the Cold War, but was a threat to Soviet bombers. First fighter with supercruise long before the F-22...
A skyrocket
English Electric beautiful danger
Speed of Mach 2.3
Fast climber, point defender

Red bombers should stay away
From British skies during night or day
Aden equipped
Firestreak missiles- forward, two were strapped under

Swept wing and tail surprise
Lightning fast at targets inbound
Escorted TUs through the skies
Had they strayed, would've shot 'em down

(Bridge)

The British pilots loved you
With that single intake nose
As twin Avons did glow

They loved you over Mach 2
During the Cold War years
Until Tornado arrived

(Chorus)
Sonic booms, sonic booms, sonic booms
Beautiful danger
Supercruise, supercruise, supercruise
Beautiful danger

Red bombers should stay away
From British skies during night or day
Aden equipped
Firestreak missiles- forward, two were slung under

Interceptor had its place
Blistering performance in any race
RAF thought that it was cool
Planned versions would have been improved

(Bridge)

Throughout so many years
All were flown with pride

(Chorus)

I remember a photo from the early 1960's. One of these jets was about 50 feet above the ground, nose down, and the pilot had just ejected. I'll try to find it online somewhere. I thought that a couple of years ago there were a few Lightnings still flying for research purposes. I remember the "sonic booms" that were common in the early 1960's as military jets flew cross-country at supersonic speeds. Often the TV or radio would warn the public in advance what time to expect them. Haven't heard one in years.

Patrick, yeah, that's a famous pic of the Lightning where the guy on the tractor is in the foreground. The pilot did manage to eject before the nose down, but landed in a greenhouse and broke his legs and thigh. Some aviation guys thought the pic was a fake until proven it got a classification stamp on it from the military.
