The Lyrics

Or... the joys of using the wrong keyboard setup: anybody using a UK keyboard with the default (US) Windows configuration will know that " and @ are transposed, and where the £ key is on a UK keyboard will give you a #. So it's easy to make a # of your documents.

Technical notes for pedants: The ¦ (pipe) used here is not a real pipe (the vertical bar - Shift+Backslash on a UK keyboard) as that one caused problems. Just hoping that this doesn't do something similar...

Key to pronunciation:
" - double quotes (or "bunny-ears")
@ - at
~ - tilde
¦ - pipe
£ - Pound
? - query
¿ - query (in Spanish)
€ - Euro
\ - backslash
+ - plus
! - shriek
< - chevron (or "less than")
I can't type for toffee, going out of my mind
I don't think that my keyboard's been correctly defined
I can't print this document looking like that
I looked for the " and just got an @

Oh, where is the ~
No, can't find the ~
I need a ~
I got a problem
It printed a ¦
I hit the £ key
I got a # sign

I started touch-typing but I couldn't tpye ,uch
Turns out my PC had been set up in Dutch
Selected American: more fun to be had
Can't find a € - I guess it isn't all bad

Oh, I need a ?
I got a ¿
I need a quick key
You've got your problems
I got an @ sign
Can't find a \
I need a #¦
I need a #¦

Oh, I've got a ?
Oh, answer my ?
Here's my ?
I want a <
I lost the + sign
Can't find the big !
I need a #¦
I need a #¦

I've got my #¦
I've got my #¦

Switch to a multi-byte UTF-8 character set and all your troubles will be over, har har. I especially like "I can't type for toffee" .... but sorry, RBG, DKTOS. ;-)

Well, JD, you can hear the MIDI here (which also has a link to the original lyrics):

EXCELLENT!!!!!!

Hmmm... the terminal emulators we use at work have an odd habit of randomly setting themselves to US keymaps (after being happy enough set to UK for months beforehand). The sudden switch between " and @ is quite a shock after not looking at the screen for 30 minutes (I can't touch type), then finding my program won't compile :-(

Thank you for expressing my plight so excellently :-) 5's

Hi Billy - good to see you round: been writing much recently? (like, I can't remember seeing any new parodies of yours)
Adam - it's kind of sad to say that not only do I touch-type, but the US keyboard layout is so common on customer PCs that I switch into US mode for " and # without really thinking.

Gave you benefit of the doubt on pacing, as I don't know the original...but I can relate to both the typographical humor and the keyboard-layout frustration. (I used to switch between US and Swedish mode frequently, until I found a macro-driven program for typing accented characters.)
