Song Parodies -> "Yestergay"

Original Song Title:

"Yesterday"

Original Performer:

Beatles

Parody Song Title:

"Yestergay"

Parody Written by:

John A. Barry

The Lyrics

Yesterday,
There's no double entendre for "gay."
Just meant "acting in a happy way."
No thoughts of queens in yestergay.

Suddenly,
It meant men who sometimes act like she
Or dyke gals—whoa! Mal mot, not PC.
But yesterday, gay meant "carefree."

Then things changed, we know
Why's that so? I cannot say.
The word isn't long,
But now gone is yestergay-ay-ay-ay.

Yesterday,
Love of same sex was not labeled "gay,"
But such thoughts one had to hide away.
So book I cleave, check lex of "gay."

'twasn't always so; it meant 'ho'
For gals astray.
For those who swing schlong,
It meant long-ing for a lay, lady lay. . .

. . .Seventeenth
Century. Then semantic shift, "gay":
Early twentieth until today,
We mostly mean it, sex this way:

Boy and boy or gal and gal.

Sir John - you have finally gotten to the number 1 position on the board. I find it amazing that the ad that appears here now on the right is the Beatles 1 Album with a bright red cover and a large yellow 1.. How did they know to put that up for you?

Oh yeah - about the parody. It's gay.

Congrats on summiting with yet another dandy submission. Interesting, too. I don't recall being aware of "gay" having any sexual orientation-related sense before mid'70s, at least, ans was surprised to read in a Billy Strayhorn bio that it was commonly thus understood in his time, 'tho not so widely as now outside the "homosexual community" itself. Live and learn. Shrug. :-)
Chuckles - March 21, 2008 - Report this comment
Even more interesting, is now Gay seems to be used more a slang word for odd or different, I still think it should mean happy--which in a way describes homosexuals as well (happy) but odd?--how did the word get transformed to odd?
