The Lyrics

It was one day in June, an awesome and auspicious day
When Phil decided that he had some food he had to throw away
That fridge of his was reeking and he couldn't stand it anymore
He sat an empty garbage bin right down by his back door
He had to summons all his courage, just to open up and have a peek
And now Phil's been busy cleaning his refrigerator for a week

He started with the top shelf, something looked like old green peas
At least they sure were moldy, but it couldn've been old swiss cheese
There were 5 old V-8 bottles that he had to throw
And the stench of everything made Phil just want to blow
Seems like he never ate that little bag of cookies--Pepperidge
And now Phil has gotten down to business cleaning out his stinky
fridge

Down in the crisper there was something seething, moving in a
plastic bag
Phil saw it once was lettuce and he began to heave and gag
And that banana was as black as coal from a Kentucky mine
And the Welch's grape juice had sure enough turned to wine
Phil got another paper towel and said this is a privilege
I'm gonna make it sparkle, and he kept on cleaning out his fridge

Then Phil began to know what had happened to his appetite--
Every time he'd opened up the fridge he didn't want to take a bite
That's why Burger King and Taco Bell and Pizza Hut became his
friends
But his love reltionship with fast food had come to an end
he had enough containers to build some kind of bridge
The day that Phil Alexander decided to clean out his fridge

Now this story is exhausting and Phil, he was exhausted too
he used up every rag and Clorox Bleach, and baking soda too
And the garbage guys had to come around and make three trips
For Hefty sacks with yellow ties-on the truck they were flipped
But now it's organized and sanitized, every single little smidge
Cause Mr. Alexander has cleaned out his filthy, stinking fridge

Tough one. I know, from having done "Ode to Philly Joe." Good job, Royce, especially on "Pepperidge."

What makes you think I'd clean out the fridge? I prefer to let evolution take its course, and eventually something will evolve that wants to live in a cleaner fridge and will clean the thing itself ;-) But I'm going to have to find the original - don't know it, I'm afraid

Careful, Phil, not everyone on this board believes in evolution! (I do, but sometimes politics makes me question it.)

Snigger... I know what you mean: it does make you feel we're moving backwards, sometimes. But then, you have to remember that the same sort of survival pressures don't operate on homo sapiens any more, so all sorts of dodgy types can live and thrive...
