Parody Song Title:

"Metonymy"

Parody Written by:

John A. Barry

The Lyrics

"Metonymy," "synecdoche"--I always get these two mixed up. Wonder why? From Webster's Collegiate, Eleventh Edition: "Metonymy: a figure of speech consisting of the use of the name of one thing for that of another of which is it an attribute or with which is associated (as 'crown' in 'lands belonging to the crown')." "Synecdoche [si-NECK-duh-key]: a figure of speech by which the part is put for the whole (as in 'fifty sail' for 'fifty ships'), the whole for a part (as 'society' for 'high society'), the species for the genus (as 'cutthroat' for 'assassin'), the genus for the species (as 'a creature' for 'a man'), and the name of the material for the thing made (as 'boards' for 'stage')." Paradoxically/ironically/coincidentally (?) the Random House UNABRIDGED has a shorter definition.
Subset metonymy
Seems of synecdoche,
Where one thing stands for something and
Instead of "ten ships," say "ten sail," then.

Is this metonymy?
Is it synecdoche?
"Crown" stands for guy on throne so high;
"Crown"'s an attribute of regal men.

It's far beyond my arts,
Synopsize in this tune
"Synecdoche"'s def., but
"Metonymy"'s I'll try soon:

Figure of speech whose chore:
Use name of one thing for
That of which it's attributed
Or with which it's associated.

Figuratively and attributively speaking, the sum of your paradocal parts is less than the totatality of your genus genius... (Yo, Yo! Random is in the House!)... by the way... excellent and informative!
