The Lyrics

Up in the sky, (Tern, Tern, Tern)
Down by the seashore, (Tern, Tern, Tern)
I watch them gliding, swooping,
Count eleven..

They flutter and fly - from morn to night
Have no sunburn, tho' sun is bright
Their wings air fill, small fish their meal
A nature show, a lovely sight..

Up in the sky, (Tern, Tern, Tern)
Down by the seashore, (Tern, Tern, Tern)
I watch them gliding, swooping,
There's eleven..

They come for bread crumbs, the beachers throw down
Perch on their arm, high tone their sound
They peck and play in the sand, and enjoy nature grand,
Together

So beautiful, (Tern, Tern, Tern)
In warm seasons, (Tern, Tern, Tern)
As I watch them flying, hover,
Under heaven

Symbol of peace, they show no hate
They'll start no wars, always at peace
They hold no grudge, and no politics, are embracing

So beautiful, (Tern, Tern, Tern)
In this warm season, (Tern, Tern, Tern)
As I watch them flying, hover,
Beneath heaven

They never flee, or hide in caves,
Free from all worries, no time saves,
Unpredjudiced, no past like slaves,
They only catch the breeze, and dance on waves

Up in the sky, (Tern, Tern, Tern)
Down by the seashore, (Tern, Tern, Tern)
Love to watch them gliding, swooping,
Count eleven...

No right hand Terns, no Terns for worse,
They get along - and seldom curse,
Sea is their song - they have no nurse,
We sure could learn - from the amazing Tern

The first one I ever saw was in Russell, Kansas, about as far inland as you can get in the USA. Once a year or so, a big flock will show up in metro Kansas City. Very impressive sight for the land-locked.
