The Lyrics

DKTOS? video here. Newbies... we've all been one at some point, though chances are if you are reading this you've made considerable progress since those days. Sometimes I get the feeling that leaving a comment under a new author's not-so-stellar parody is less productive than talking to my cat. . .
I've seen - the bad newbs a-writin'
I've seen - humor gone astray
I've seen - no pace or rhymin'
Won't see votes come their way

What goes through their minds
When they FU-BAR all the lines?
There's... a bad tune on the site

I see tumbleweeds a-blowin'
I know the comments box is nude
"Oh dear, where is this song goin'?"
That's if... it even gets reviewed

Don't go write it tight
And deny all our advice
Make a bad tune for the site
All cry!

~solo~

Hope they get their stuff together
So I can fin'ly share some fives
Wish guys here would not post whatever
And waste three minutes of our lives

Hell.... some eat ones in stride
Like with guns at Columbine
(There's... a bad tune... AmiRight?)

Get the meter right
With a theme the readers like
Share... a rad tune on this site

I like the OS... as a "newbie" myself I took little offense. I didn't find the song all that funny though. Props on the pacing. Take 534 lines for yourself and ignore the fact that I wish I can come up with something half decent.

Can't say I get the Columbine reference, but yeah, there's some odd stuff gets posted here. It never ceases to amaze me the ability of some people to delude themselves into thinking they are talented. For proof, watch American Idol. But you get 5s.

Pretty good! To me this looks like you are writing about TSB's parodies!

I pitty the fool that won't take advice from people who are more skilled or do something in an attempt to become better.

A-freakin'-men! The overall quality has gone down lately, and it's not the fault of veterans like you and me.

Some n00bs must have tried to bring your score down, but I'll try to bring it back up. I remember when you posted that Artist page on the forums that you were surprised that you didn't write a CCR parody yet. Now you have... What's next? Jane's Addiction? Or perhaps Tool?

When will we get it through people's heads that sex, violence and drugs are not funny? The best parodies are witty and clean fun.

Once you had that noob writing tips and tricks thread, now you've shortened it all down to fit one single parody, he-he. :-)

Something else I forgot to mention, Im very surprised Jonathan S. hasn't commented on this. He will have a fit if he sees this!

excellent Jack! masterful write - this is how you do it, newbies. although the good thing is that when a talented newbie does arrive, he/she sticks out a mile, and they get welcomed with great warmth here from us relieved vets - 555

Thanks Andrew, McKludge, Jason, Ann, Mike, Matt, Jack, Alvin, Aggy, Mason, Jon, 2Eagle, Peter, Jason, AFW, and Stu!

Andrew: I seem to be in the odd spot these days of having lots of ideas but little time to write them.

McKludge, Aggy and Mason: I admit the Columbine line was off-color and intentionally so for two reasons: one being that only newbs would put that in and expect good scores (hence the parenthetical line that follows it) and two that some (many? most?) newb authors can get massacred (or praised) in the comments field and still not learn anything from it. I don't see why some check the comments box at all...

Jonathan: Nope, not about you.

Ann: I think that everyone can learn something new from a parody, whether it be an idea for a parody of your own, some new trick or improvement, a style or format change or sometimes what NOT to do.

Michael: I'm flattered to be called a veteran by you. It doesn't seem all that long ago I was a newbie. I've come a long way since my earliest works, and if I can do it, I figure most anyone else can as well.

2Eagle: I think it might have been Paul Robinson who once said something to the effect of "any idiot can rhyme 'suck' with 'f***'". I tend to like parodies that are a bit more on the edgy side, but I see your point, especially about the "witty" part.

Peter: I guess this parody could be considered a condensed version of that thread... which is good, because listing everything out at this point would be a small book. =)

Stu: I agree completely. And there has been a lot of newer authors this year, especially as of late, who are definitely exceptions to this parody.

Well said. I make a habit of checking out newbie works (if the OS isn't too new for an oldie like me) but lately...jeeesh!

(ART 55)

Jack .I like the ref to 3 minutes of our time. One flaw, however - the ref to Columbine makes that part of the parody void of any humor. But I'm not countng you down for that line. It's still 5 material.

And yes I am entering this round - I just can't find the right CCR parody of mine to use. I have a choice from 42 of them. I wish I could enter several of them.

(Artistry) Excellent writing, though the Columbine line is pretty jarring (as you intended). If you wanted to travel the more PC path, you could have written something like "They think we'll laugh and whoop / As we read about their poop" . :-) Very proficient work, both a training manual and a great example of the craft.
Medemia - August 16, 2009 - Report this comment
I caught the purpose of the Columbine reference as songs that just shouldn't be written and people have no shame. Very nicely written.

I've reread Jack's parody this morning and caught the ref that you are speaking of. I did give him two points in the ART 55 comp. Still, he should have done something different as Rex suggested.. Given the huge number of people that hit this site it is a sure bet that there are people who knew some of the Columbine victims. You need to consider who your audience may be. It's the six degrees of seperation model. Ref:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Six_degrees_of_separation

Six degrees of separation refers to the idea that, if a person is one step away from each person they know and two steps away from each person who is known by one of the people they know, then everyone is at most six steps away from any other person on Earth. So what are the odds that someone who read this parody knew someone at Columbine who was a victim?

(Artistry) Ah, I was a newb once...man, those times sucked. Good thing I've lifted my game since then, otherwise this parody may be striking just a little closer to home than I'd like. At least you weren't too condescending. 555 for you!
Below Average Dave - August 28, 2009 - Report this comment
(Artistry) As a whole I thought this was a good write, though some of the individual lines (like the reference to Columbine for example) seemed a little random or harsh on newbies in general. I think we all learn from expert writers such as yourself and how to appreciate variety and such, unfortunately 90% of newbies have no interest in actually improving their skills and an almost equal number of veterans are not there to show the newbies the ropes, which can get frustrating on both ends. Overall a 5-4-5 as I didn't really get any big laughs, good write but not out of the ballpark funny.
