The Lyrics

Not very long ago,
Fondly, we remember
Our pet parrot who could make us smile
He would talk with a nod and glance
And used to bow, and loved to dance
And strut around in Cary Grant-ish style

But now he's gone, and chills we shiver
The "Miss Him" tears flow like a river
Just slipped out the doorway,
By now, could be in Norway..

Searched everywhere, around outside,
Never found a trace, not hair, nor hide,
We loved that bird, he was our pride
Now part of us has died..
Ohh....

High, high, our pet parrot can fly
With a flutter, slick as butter,
Spread his wings in the sky..
A zoomin' noise, and he was cruisin' speed high
We've sadly, learned our parrot can fly..
Sadly, learned that parrots can fly

Bought him at the pet shop store,
The price was five hundred bucks, or more
His bright colors made us glow
He could get down and do rock n' roll
I'll tell ya' that bird had a soul,
When we played "Misty" he would dance real slow

Friends all knew of our pet love for him
Every Christmas Eve, he helped us trim
We made him little shoes
He'd turn pages, when we read news

We were a trio..close together stuck
Off of my beer bottles, every cap he'd pluck
Sometimes he'd imitate a duck
Now part of us has died..
We just keep wond'rin'..

Why, why, did our pet parrot fly,
Fed him ample, not a sample, really pampered the guy
We bought him toys, and Hagen Daaz in July
Now it seems, he's traded us for the sky
Now, he's traded us for the sky..

Named him Nicholas, was five years of age
Taught Nicholas how to unlatch his Cage
That was a trick unwise, I see
Nicholas used to insult my wife and son
He used yell out, "F-You"..favorite one
And sometimes, "M-F-er" he'd call me

On my cheek, brushed his feathered crown
Sucked wint-o-green Lifesavers down,
A wolf whistle he learned
Made ladies smile and turn

He could puff a lighted cigarette
Dip his wings and get us wet
That lovin' bird we can't forget,
A part of us has died
We keep thinkin'..

Why, why, did our pet parrot fly,
Spoiled like Miley, life of Riley, even fed apple pie
We taught him poise, he strutted cocky and spry
The bird was really clever and sly
He was really clever and sly....

Wife knitted him a cute little sweater
Left it behind, and it sure upset her
Now, she cannot throw it out..
Hangs in the closet with hers
Each day we search thru binoculars
And keep hopin' that he'll fly back from the south

In his cage we built a little shrine
There's a cigarette, small glass of wine
A candle, nightly lit
Next to the perch where he would sit

Called the paper..and we placed an ad
We want our Nicholas back real bad,
Now every day we get more sad
Just hope he has not died..
So hard to go on..

Where, where, did our pet parrot go
To Chicago, San Diego, or to Kokomo,
We've lost our joys..and happy times we would know
Christmas comin'..there'll be no ho ho ho
Chistmas will have no ho ho ho..

We printed large photos of his face
Posted in town and on MySpace
Tried everything we can think of..
To get our precious parrot home again
A big reward we're offerin'
Hope someone can return our feathered love

Each day we stare at his silver cage
Can't read..no Nicholas turns the page
Without our big beaked pal
Our lives are an empty shell

We go to bed heartbroken every night
And pray that with the morning light
He'll be in his cage, our dream delight
But it's a dream denied
Always empty..

Gray, gray, all our days are so gray
Sun is shinin, but we're pinin', just keep whinin' away
Have no enjoys..and gettin' down more each day
'Cause we need our rainbow friend here to play
Need our rainbow friend here to play..

And then one Sunday midst the blues
Received some real exciting news
Something that really made our day..
A lady knocked upon our door,
We heard the words we'd been waitin' for
And those three words, "Found Your Parrot" heard her say

We all three danced around and sang
I called the pastor, the church bells rang
She brought in Nicholas for us,
It was a moment joyous

We hugged him..cried a welcome bid,
He looked as great as he ever did
We asked "Where were you?" he said, "Vegas, Kid"
We had to laugh with pride..
And kept on singin:

Hi, hi, welcome Nicholas guy
What a blessing, we're carressing with a laugh and a cry
We're makin' noise, and shoutin' thanks to the sky
Shoutin' thank you's to the Lord in the sky..
Thank you's to the Lord in the sky

We clipped his wings now,

High, high, now our parrot can't fly
No more flutter, slick as butter,
Spreadin' wings in the sky
No Vegas ploys..just our old home buddy guy
Only "F-You's" and his "M-F'er's" fly
"F-You's" and some "M-F'er's" fly

The study of parrot behavior is well documented by a SFO writer in Parrots of Telegraph Hill,. This is quite humorous and delightful, sir L'Air de Farce,

My favorite of the day - lots of great gets in this, but "Taught Nicholas how to unlatch his Cage" was the best. Great variations and rhyming in the choruses. Awesome ending too. 5s+

Hilarious rhymes, and I love a great story told to song like that. Nice to have a happy ending, too. (Wonder how he did in Vegas :-)

As Red Ant pointed out, bad Nicholas Cage pun. Also like the apple pie line and the rest of the parody.

Once more you've proved you're a spoofing genius, AFW (even after thousands of parodies that proved that already). You're amazing. 5's plus.

WOO HOO! Thank you for a great bird song. Should I thank my lucky stars that my babies can't talk? I'd like to challenge you to write words to either 'And Your Bird Can Sing' or 'Free as a Bird'
