Parody Song Title:

"I Was of Very Good Cheer"

Parody Written by:

John A. Barry

The Lyrics

When I had seven Beams,
I was of very good cheer.
I was of very good cheer—that is, till I hurled
And got into fights.
They punched out my lights,
And then my face turned green,
When I had seven Beams.

When I had twenty rums,
I got maudlin and I teared.
I topped them off with a beer, and then spit and hurled
And fell down the stairs,
Puke perfuming my hair;
I swallowed my tongue,
When I had twenty rums.

When I had thirty pints
Of gin spiked with Everclear
I wished a doctor was near—there's blood in my hurl.
I'm gin-dependent. . .seems.
Flag down this limousine
For hospital ride,
To pump out thirty pints.

I no longer take snorts;
I am on Antabuse this year,
So I get ill each time I smell vintage wine
Or see beer kegs,
Even wine with good legs.
Now my head is clear,
I'm not at all of good cheer.

Keep drinking! When you finally come out of your haze, you'll feel better and you might even have your head together (after you get over the hangover, that is).

Ugh...I got sick just thinking about it. But I still loved this.

Bottoms up, everyone--thanks.

This would have made perfect background music to the anti-alcohol films they showed in my high-school health class. Using a mawkish original, turning the mood on its head and playing on the original lyrics whenever you could--those earn three solid 5's in my book.

Yes, I read Kristof's, then yours John, then I've got to go and open my bar to these people in a few hours - although we don't stock Everclear - 555

Good one John! (As I just discovered that a shot of gin mixed into a glass of Ensure is a sure-fire receipe for a splitting headache)...
