Song Parodies -> "World Without Pitney"

Original Song Title:

"Town Without Pity"

Original Performer:

Gene Pitney

Parody Song Title:

"World Without Pitney"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

Singer, Gene Pitney passed away in Britain, yesterday at the age of 65
He achieved great popularity
If you're not that young, mature like me
You will know his unique style
Reminisce a little while
Sad the World Without Pitney will be

Sang a lot of movie songs and themes
And he had his share of teenage screams
Now the tunes, he'll sing no more
Close another "Sixties" door
Sadder World Without Pitney, it seems

He had a great range, reached the high notes
Hits like, "Half Heaven, Half Heartache"
You may recall his first big seller
Twenty Four Hours into Tulsa, it would take

That's our tribute, and though Gene is gone
In our hearts, his music shall live on
Like his hit that topped the chart,
"Only Love Can Break A Heart"
To the fam'ly goes our sympathy
Sad the World Without Pitney will be

In every town and city,
Sad the World Without Pitney will be

This is the first I've heard of it. An immense talent. In 1962, he had, at the same time, authorship of the Number 1 song in America ("He's a Rebel" by the Crystals) and performance of the Number 2 song ("Only Love Can Break a Heart"). I don't know how many performers have had that, other than the Beatles -- rappers who use samples are automatically disqualified, and if you think Elvis ever wrote the songs that are partially credited to him, ask him yourself whether he did. Gene also wrote, and I'm pretty sure sang backup on, Ricky Nelson's "Hello Mary Lou." Yes, he's better than Britney, what a tribute to Pitney... can... do!

Sorry to hear this. I grew up listening to Gene. Liked one of his lesser known singles, "Last Exit to Brooklyn," a lot. Nice tribute. 5s

It is not possible to say enough about, or do "too many" tributes to, Gene Pitney. Fine sentiments, finely and Five-ly executed.

John B, the movie was "Last Exit To Brooklyn". The song was "Last Chance To Turn Around."
