The Lyrics

Brave Afghani voters (those not intimidated by the Taliban) tested on August 20 whether Islam (submission) is compatible with democracy (freedom). Their will continues to be threatened until all ballots are secured and tallied. Here is my imagined testimony of a fearful and exhausted election worker, based on this OS.
Pray-o, pray-ay-ay-o
Twilight come and me wan' go home
Pray-o, pray-ay-ay-o
Twilight come and me wan' go home

Work all day on the brink of numb
Twilight come and me wan' go home
Stack de ballots till de ev'ning come
Twilight come and me wan' go home

Some whisper Taliban cut off purple finger
Twilight come and me wan' go home
Some whisper Taliban hunt when people linger
Twilight come and me wan' go home

They nix all candidates, my hunch
Twilight come and me wan' go home
Nix all candidates, whole bunch
Twilight come and me wan' go home

Pray, me say pray-ay-ay-o
Twilight come and me wan' go home
Pray, me say pray, five a day, me say pray
Twilight come and me wan' go home

Beautiful bunch of ripe cucumbers
Twilight come and me wan' go home
Hide the deadly truckload bombers
Twilight come and me wan' go home

Few sticks of C4 shake and crunch
Twilight come and me wan' go home
Mixed with nails to break and punch
Twilight come and me wan' go home

Pray, me say pray-ay-ay-o
Twilight come and me wan' go home
Pray, me say pray, five a day, me say pray
Twilight come and me wan' go home

Come listen, Taliban: tally be manyana
Twilight come and me wan' go home
Come listen, Taliban: rally we manyana
Twilight come and me wan' go home

De-o, De-e-e-o
Deo come and me can go home
De, me say De, me say De, me say De-e-e-o
Deo come and me can ... go ... home
The ending is my hopeful speculation about the distant future there.

Afghans have the courage to vote, when it means risking one's life. A fine take on Belefonte's classic.

Nice job on this 50s ("misc") song. I agree with Patrick. Perfect 5s.

Patrick: yes, a privilege we take for granted. Guest: you're right, 50s; I still have his 1956 vinyl LP and should be more careful. Its peak rank was Billboard #5 in 1957. BTW, my OS source was http://www.digihitch.com/road-culture/music-lyrics/419 because I could not copy the text from the link hidden above.

Thanks to all C/Vs. It's good to see so many amirighters aware of the Afghan struggle to unite and communicate among diverse and scattered groups across challenging terrain. Now even minor candidates are alleging fraud; let's hope for a large winning margin.
