The Lyrics

The OS's author, Carole King, and Ralph Kramden's portrayer, Jackie Gleason, are both from Brooklyn, but that's about all they had in common.
Woke up this morning feeling fine.
Job in the sewer sure ain't mine.
Played pool against Ralph and Ed
with a cue of wood.
Oh yeah.
Something tells me I'm into Kramden's 'hood.
(Something tells me I'm into Kramden's)

He's the kind of man who's not too shy.
And I can tell he's a corpulent guy.
Threatened to send me to Moon
like I knew he could.
Oh yeah.
Something tells me I'm into Kramden's 'hood.
(Something tells me I'm into Kramden's)

I checked out Alice for a minute or two
then he tried hit me the whole night through.
How did those two fall in love?
(That was the script that they're acting of.)
That was the script that they were acting of.

Wearing those jackets and their raccoon caps.
Going bowling, or shooting craps?
Gulping down Chinese food, and they think it's good.
Oh yeah.
Something tells me I'm into Kramden's 'hood.
(Something tells me I'm into Kramden's)
(Something tells me I'm into Kramden's)

(instrumental break)

They lived in Bushwick, not Bensonhurst.
In New York's crime wave, nearly the worst.
Got bad after their time, but now it's closer to good.
Oh yeah.
Something tells me I'm into Kramden's 'hood.
(Something tells me I'm into Kramden's)
Something tells me I'm into Kramden's 'hood.
(Something tells me I'm into Kramden's)
Something tells me I'm into Kramden's 'hood.
(Something tells me I'm into Kramden's)
(repeat 'til fade)
It's true: 328 Chauncey Street is a real address, and it's in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, not Bensonhurst as was so often mentioned on the show. I visited in 1990, and the place was a hole. In fact, 328 was the only building on Chauncey Street that looked visible -- probably cleaned up by devoted Honeymoonies. The neighborhood in particular and Brooklyn as a whole is far better off now. And one of Chauncey's cross streets is... Ralph Avenue. I'm guessing Gleason got the name from the street, although I have no idea where the name "Kramden" came from.

That should have read, "328 was the only building on Chauncey Street that looked livable." Not "visible."
