The Lyrics

Another appearance of one of my recurring characters, "The Fly", based on the 1959 movie of the same name starring Al(David)Hedison and Vincent Price. In addition to "the Fly", of course, we have the guy who keeps SEEING this freaky fly - with a guy's head on top of a fly's body. Lyrics in {brackets} are sung to the instrumental parts. This OS was written by one Billy Ed Wheeler and has been performed by Richie Havens, the Jefferson Airplane and many others, but the psychedelic HP Lovecraft version really fits this story perfectly.
[instrumental intro]

I know this sounds absurd
but I just saw this fly
'cept that on that fly I noticed that
his head was like a guy
Dammit, I swear - was not drinking
I was dry

Looked to me (yeah, it seemed)
he was some kind of freak (was a freak, yeah)
That fly did flit down
did fly
then landed
by my side
true...dude
{it was the truth, dude}

He said, "I need help
I am in a bad way
I'm quite terrified of spiders
Yes, I'm so very afraid
Spiders would eat me
a side dish
damn, Oy Vey!

A side dish
Oy Vey!
I'm frightened and dismayed
Frightened of spiders...
they freak me...out, sir...

[instrumental break]

{Freak me out, sir - I'm afraid of spiders}
{I don't like bugs much, anyway...Oh, Wait, I guess that's me now}
{Well, anyway, dude - please help me or I'm screwed}
{and that's the truth, dude}
{Please help me or I may die...}
{IT'S AWFUL BEING A FLY!}

[2nd line here is hollered in a high-pitched scream]
Oh-oh-oh,
HEEELLLLPPPP MEEEEE PLEEEEASE!
My head's on fly's body (EEK!)
And I eat sh*t now
'cause fly
decides
where we dine...
Please guy
we dine
on sh*t 'cause
fly decides
Wish I
could contrive
some way to
change his mind
Phew...
Eeewww...
Phew...
Eeewww.
Dude, it's screwed...

[below lyrics to group chorus out to end fade]

Oh, please, help me guy
my head's stuck on a fly
Afraid I will die
Spiders - I'm terrified
That fly decides
on where we're gonna dine
Think I'd rather die
than eat sh*t as a fly..."

[out to end fade]

Thanks, alvin...me, too...my older brother Peter took me to see a "Double-Horror" feature movie showing at the old Wiltern Theatre here in L.A., 1959 - I was 9 years old. I don't know what the occasion...it was the only time he ever took me to the movies that I can recall...the folks must have saddled him with "baby-sitting" and gone out for the evening...Anyway, I will never forget it...scared the crap out of me! "The Horrors of the Black Museum" and "The Fly". "Horrors" was first...it opens with an every day street scene - it's in London, so the folks are talking with British accents - and a woman getting a "mystery" package delivered to her...it's binoculars...she wonders who could have sent them...no note...her roommate giggles that "Perhaps it's a 'Secret Admirer" and then the woman puts the binocs to her eyes...for a moment you see the enlarged street scene as though thru the binocular lenses...and then you hear this horrifying, piercing scream and bright red gushes down over your view...I must have jumped 3 feet off of my seat...Whew! "The Fly" was very scary and very intriguing to me. I remember the story better than I remember anything from the other movie except that grisly and totally mind-blowing opening sequence.

Never did see any of the movies. Too chicken, I guess. The parody was scary enough and the fly eating? Ewwww.. 5's How did your head get on the fly's body?

This reminds me when I saw The Fly (or was it part 2?) around 1989. I was on board the USS Ranger (a now decomissioned non-nuclear drivetrain aircraft carrier) as part of a Tiger Cruise with my uncle who was active duty then. Anyway, it's like 3:00am, and I'm watching this movie, which was fairly boring up until the scene where the guy gets his head crushed by the elevator. At that point, I started laughing hysterically, waking up everyone within earshot. Needless to say, they didn't find it too funny. Where was I? Oh, I've never seen the original, but I remember enough from the remakes to know this is good. 3 Flies!

AFW, Jason, Adagio & Red Ant - thanks! AFW - The original was very good for it's time...they didn't have the type of Special Effects capability that today's movies have, but the were a few very well dones scenes from the Effect POV. The original was based on short story and expanded out a bit, but the story stayed pretty simple. I REALLY like the Goldblum/Geena Davis remake - David Cronenberg directed that one, and he really pulled out the stops on his preference for gore and scarey stuff...but the expanded story for the remake was as "engrossing" as the Effect were "grossing". It really became a full tragedy when all emotional angst and heartbreak was put into the story. You (or at least I) felt tremendous sadness for Goldblum's "Fly" and Geena Davis' journalist for the characters - and then mix that in with the horrifyingly gruesome Effects when "Fly" eats that dude...showing as much human empathy as one would extend to their morning donut. I never saw the sequel to the remake, I heard it was pretty bad. Adagio - neither of the movie's show "Fly" eating doo-doo...that's just a sick little addition my mind came up...because, as many of us have observed from time-to-time, flies DO eat "DOO"...And as I was trying to come up with things that a former human turned part-fly would find "scary " (Spiders, for instance) and/or "unpleasant" that might fit into my story the moment the image came to me of a fly flitting down onto a turd and digging in I knew I had something I could, uh...sink my teeth into...metaphorically speaking, only, mind you...and then I figured, well, OK...he has the head of the guy, but the fly part still controls the wings...so they go where the "fly" part wants to go...the "head" gets to think, but not decide...so at meal time he's stuck...and they're flying around and guess what? That's right - a nice big, juicy and reeking turd comes into view...so here they go - that fly is digging it...but the "guy", well, as they turn and accelerate and head right towards it the realization of what dinner is gonna be is not a 'cause for contentment for him...Red, I get the feeling that sequel reallly laid a turd...I don't see how they could have come up with a better and more riveting story than the 1st remake...

Pat, I didn't answer your question...OK, in the original the "Fly" was created when this scientist (played by Al Hedison) was working on an invention that could transport matter from one place to another...like the transporter in "Star-Trek". He was successful with small, inanimate objects, but he wanted to give it the REAL test...and I believe he tried a mouse or something first...and it worked...so he decided to skip all those boring "additional verifying tests" and just "go for it" and transport himself...So he gets into the chamber and he's just about to close it up and activate it...and this little house-fly flits into the chamber with him. Now the theory and practice of this invention is that to move you it has to temporarily take you apart and break you down to atoms more or less. So science guy...and fly...and now all just "atom particles" that are minuscule enough to travel through solid objects...and when they get to their destination...just another chamber on the other side of the laboratory in this case...they get reassembled...well...in the re-assembly process the "parts" get mixed...fly&guy, guy&fly...the scientist's body reassembled just fine...but the head...well, not so good - he got the fly's. Little house-fly was still flitting around...maybe about to check out and look for some dinner...but now he's a little-bitty human head on the body. The remake had a more nuanced and complicated story-line there...the metamorphis is gradual and you get to see Goldblum's character start to change and at some point suddenly realize what's actually happening to him...it's really mind-blowing and very graphic in the film...not to watch while eating, for sure...
