The Lyrics
The term Action Painting was coined by the American critic Harold Rosenberg in 1952, in his essay "The American Action Painters.” I coined the term trAction Painting (a.k.a. Wheelism) to describe a process I pioneered of applying paint to flat surfaces with wheeled conveyances. Did an exhibition recently in 90-degree heat. . .brutal!
I’m carried on a two-wheeler, gonna let latex spurt out—
I am talkin’ ’bout trAction Painting—here’s what it is all about:
take-off on “Action”. . .Rosenberg did propound
I changed it to trAction;
now I’m trAction-bound.
I’m ridin’ ’round for trAction. . .sometimes must do it through stealth
on abandoned stretch of macadam, where I lay down a wealth
of hues with trAction, but not just there.
Such fun: latest showoff of trAction,
at an art fair.
There was no breeze in that city—sun was hot, reflective, wow! (Whew!)
Coconut water to slake me: electrolytes took a pow-der
during trAction. By heatstroke I ’s nearly smote.
Tad too hot for trAction. . .
a lot of paint to tote.
Had a big canvas for trAction yet had to pedal slowly with my legs.
By dimensions bound. . .12 by 20 sounds
big, but “wish I had more,” I begged.
Need space for trAction so I can expand
scope of my field of action on spaces on flat land.
Then I’m carried upon four wheelers—inline skates move me about.
I am talkin’ ’bout trAction, which I’ll continue to tout.
I’ll keep talkin’ trAction till I do my next act.
My ardor for trAction goes on and ain’t yet slacked.
