The Lyrics

You may not be aware that an investigation has found significant quantities of horse DNA (nearly 30% in some cases) in beefburgers.

..and if you're not from the UK, you may also not be aware that Shergar was a famous racehorse who disappeared some years ago.. but then, if you are not from the UK, you probably didn't click on this link in the first place :-)
In ev'ry burger that you eat
It say it's "x percentage meat"
And still you hope the price
Is not too high

Yet you stay firm in your belief
That all the meat in there is beef
But no, no way
They've found horse DNA

A spoonful of Shergar helps the price of beef stay down
When it's been finely ground
And stirred in all around
Just a spoonful of Shergar helps the price of beef stay down
What an enterprising way

A manufacturer of bur-
Gers gets his meat pre-ground and stirred
Not knowing it has bits of swine and pig
(And let me just say this to you:
I'm kind of glad I'm not a Jew)
He knows some meats will keep his product cheap, for

A Spoonful of Shergar helps the price of beef stay down
Enough to go around
When grilled till lightly brown
A Spoonful of Shergar helps the price of beef stay down
Full of equine DNA

But as for me, if I detect a
Trace of something that's not beef
Just as long as it ain't buzzing to and fro
I don't care if my main course
Has bits of pig or swan or horse
Or dog (woof woof),
Or cat (miaow)
I draw the line at rat

Ngggh-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h-h eurgh!

A spoonful of Shergar helps the price of beef stay down
Or even Afghan hound
Still won't make me frown
Just a spoonful of Shergar helps the price of beef stay down
But do I care? Not me, no way.

..at least this one's not too rude to pass the censor, unlike my last parody of this song :-)

Phil - My state (Kentucky) is famous for race horses and I know exactly where you're coming from. MANY good lines and setting them to such a bouncey happy tune makes it all the better! ;D

Many decades ago a new drive-in hamburger chain was selling the small burgers for 10 cents instead of the 15 cents charged by a better-known local restaurant (this was before McDonalds came to Kansas City). My dad said the cheap burgers tasted like horse meat, which he said he had eaten while in the army. A year or so later, the local news announced that horse meat had been found at this chain, and they promptly faded into oblivion.

For us bloody Yanks, just change "Shergar" to "Trigger". That was the name of the horse appearing with actor Roy Rogers in some of his movies. Later, there was a fastfood chain named after him, so we refered to their burgers as "Trigger-burgers". That was our joke....or so we thought.

I have to admit, when I first saw the title I thought it might be about artificial insemination in the horse business of something - I'm glad it wasn't! This is much better. What I love about this story is that Tesco and co. are all acting so innocent about it - "Really? NO!! We had NO IDEA - well that's just AWFUL, isn't it? Yes, rest assured, we're going to... think of some way of... doing something about this..."Very very funny, with an OS that was just asking for it, and perfectly paced. 555

Thanks all - I'm going to give this one a try at a gig this evening, fingers crossed and all that. Steve - I might try sticking in the occasional "Trigger", too :-)

Stop horsin' around Phil- 555! Btw Phil, you Brits got Nazi Heck Cattle in 2004. Are Heck burgers available yet? A lot of "Germanics" here in the US want to taste that resurrected Nazi beef! Horse in the US, due to an expiration, allows the sale of horsemeat again. But it's not on shelves... yet. A few more years of Obama and we'll probably be able to get it a Wal-Mart ;-)

Ingenious theme and match-up. Not an easy song to rework, but well within the range you ride. It gallops along with the usual helpings of sweet subs to help the hamburger go down.
