The Lyrics

On the numerologically incorrect 29th anniversary of the failure of the 1991 Politburo coup against Gorbachev, I post one of the first song parodies I ever composed. I didn't post it anywhere at the time, because back in '91, my hamster-powered Commodore 64 lacked the power to post it on any of the innumerable dial up song parody bulletin boards. (Baroomp CHING) The name Boris Pugo will show up because he was the coup plotter who first provided tantalizing evidence that the coup was failing when he, umm ... shot himself
Do do do
Down do be do down dowm
Commies coming down, doobie do down down
A Commie's on the ground, doobie do down down
Cause breaking up is hard on you

Dont take those tanks away from me
Dont leave the coup in jeopardy
If Yeltsin wins, the Old guard is thru
Cause breaking up is hard on the U

Remember when we did things right
We kept the gulag going thru the night
Think of what we put the Ukraine thru
So breaking up is hard on Soyuz*

They say that breaking up is hard on you
Well go ask Pugo, he'd have told you it's true
Dont say that this is the end
Instead of breaking up I wish that we were rolling tanks

I beg of you .. dont say goodby
Lets give the KGB another try
C'mon Boris, lets start anew
Cause breaking up is hard on the U

They say that breaking up is hard on the Poog
Hey Poog-ster, did you think that it's true
Dont say that this is the end
Instead of breaking up I wish that we were faking stuff again

I beg of you, dont let this die
Lets give that Kulak smear another try
C'mon Yeltsyn, let's start anew
Cause breaking up is hard to do

Down Poogie do, down down
Commies coming down, doobie do down down
Commies on the ground, doobie do down down
Commies coming down ......
*Russian for Union; Sovietskiy Soyuz -- Soviet Union .......... I decided not to wait for the 30th anniversary in August 2021, because the way things are changing, I cant even be sure of the earth continued existence a year from now

I wish that we were rolling tanks AGAIN. I would have caught that error but my ancient cell phone froze up right at the end -- took me 5 minutes to get the security code in and hit "Send"

This is one of your first parodies? I don't know when you got to this site, but it seems like it could've been a hit in the early days, too. Regardless, here's 555 T-72 tanks rolling through Red Square for you.

Found this site around Thanksgiving, 2011. Started posting in December

I found this site around August 2006, I estimate, and I submitted my first parody on September 20 of that year.

November 20, 2007 "Send in the Clones". One of my recurring topics ever since. Looks like I'm in the top 20 of authors who have posted anything this year. I well remember the break up of "The Evil Empire". Gorbachev was driven out, but later returned. A friend at the time suggested wrting "Gorby's Back" to the tune of "My Boy Friend's Back". If I had, there was no place to share it. I certainly agree with your premise for posting today. By this time next year the internet and freedom of speech may be a distant memory.

My Dad was an ardent anti Communist who was living under the cloud a terminal disease in 1991. So, to cheer him up I call him up.the day Boris Pugo did himself him, and said, "Hey Pop, saw a couple of interesting items in the news today -- One, continuing warming trend in the Texas Panhandle and, what was that other thing .... Oh yeah, the imminent demise of the Soviet Union."
