 (MP3)
Original Performer:

Petula Clark

Parody Song Title:

"James Brown"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

Unlike no other,
He was called The Godfather
Of Soul In his day,
James Brown

Style, a sensation
For Hip Hop generations,
Pioneered the way,
James Brown

Took RB and soul and turned it into funky rhythm
Challenges, met head on, and much credit we must give him
James was the man..
With stamina, high and rare
His lightning moves were like magic,
Great timing was there...
He was...

James Brown...
Man! he could dance and sing
James Brown...
Hits, he would have a string
James Brown...
Rock and Roll artistry King

James Brown.....
James Brown....

Fury was fashioned
From those gospel-impassioned
Baptist early days,
James Brown

Robbery conviction
Brought the house of correction
But, he changed his ways,
James Brown

High talent and charisma, soon made James a star attraction
Fired up the Fifties, "Famous Flames"..his band of action
He loved Ray Charles...
Lil' Richard, Hank Ballard, too
His lightning moves were like magic,
Great timing was there...
He was...

James Brown...
Man! he could dance and sing
James Brown...
Hits, he would have a string
James Brown....
He was a rock and roll King

James Brown..
James Brown...

Fine tribute.

"Downtown" was about as un-James Brown as a song could get at the time, which is probably why it beat out James' "Out of Sight" and everything the Beatles did for the Record of the Year Grammy. (Yes, even then, the Grammy voters were up to their necks in bogus.)

I always reckon the sign of a good parody is when you can read the lyrics and hear the music without needing a recording to help you along, and you certainly can with this one.

Using a Petula Clark song to pay tribute to James Brown is probably sacrilege, AFW...but this was so nice, you get the full tamale. 555

OK, so he was a great singer, but so were a lot of other people. I would give James Brown "ones" for "It is a Man's (repeat five times) World".

one of the best tributes I've seen AFW - beautiful flow, and great detail, and clever rhymes - 555

The OS might not have been in the style of James Brown, but it enabled a great title substitution and provided an excellent format for you to leave your message.

Thanks to Ann, Stuart, and John J

Using this song to tribute the Godfather of Soul is as incongrous as it gets. And thats why it's so funny. The jarring, incongruous match is a fundamental of humor
