The Lyrics

Hampton Roads (southeastern Virginia) was hit soon after Hurricane Irene came ashore in North Carolina on August 27. My home there was incommunicado for 105 hours, as many in the neighborhood pitched in to clear roadways first and their properties later. Our snail-mail was delivered faithfully, and only the Sunday paper was late. Kudos to some sturdy folks! CHFUDNKTOS.
Mail never wasn't sent.
Doomsayers weren't content. [1]
No phone, no "cool", mo' sweat.
I ain't got no Internet!

Ah, but .. few hours of pullin' rake
Lifts the weight left in Irene's wake.
Slime the man who leans while bro' cleans,
Sharin' the load.

First winds hard 'mid light rain,
Anticipatin' dang! more pain.
I'd worn stout boots o'er shoes;
I could wade where e'er I'd choose.

High smoke from Dismal hung around,
For 'twas hot deep in that ground; [2]
Fried the stand of trees that go-greens
Clingingly growed. [3]

I know every homeowner has insurance claims,
Hauls out their bills when a falling tree maims.
Federals hand out in flood-ravaged towns; [4]
On every block that ain't blocked,
Folks know help is found.

I sing, (repeat first eight lines)
[1] Predictions were far worse than results.
[2] An extensive and stubborn peat fire in the Dismal Swamp was not fully extinguished by 11 inches of rainfall.
[3] After Hurricane Isabel in 2003 wiped out native white cedars, the swamp was partially drained to allow their revival, but that increased susceptibility to lightning strikes.
[4] Further north, e.g., Connecticut and Vermont.

My hometown in southwest NH is about 20 miles from Brattleboro, VT, which was underwater. Was in NH a week ago; fortuitously, left just before Irene hit.

Not bad; but I suggest these lines to fit my lyrics better:
Line 1: Mail service sails, unbent;
Line 2: Doomsayers lift event.
Line 13: Change "hung" to "flies" and
Line 14: Change " 'twas" to " 'tis".

Love it, Barry. You're taking me way back with this one -- one of the pop classics, for sure.

BJM - It's amazing and re-assuring how disaster can still bring people together for the common good. Fine parody...and great testament to the good in us all. ;D
