The Lyrics

The October 30th Rally To Restore Sanity And/Or Fear was a most curious affair. In a time of economic crisis, world disorder, and horrid misery, I would have thought that thousands of our youngest and brightest would have had better things to do. A recent poll reported that 24% of Americans think The Daily Show is their most reliable (and often only) source of news. Add that to Colbert's recent in-character "appearance" before a Congressional panel and I'm beginning to wonder if I've lost my sense of humor...or my sanity! Please note in the counterpoint section (verses 2, 3, and 4) that I've written the Scarborough Fair section as Stewart (regular type) and the Canticle section as Colbert (in parenthesis). The meter is exact and there is no rhyme in the Canticle at all (Colbert would never stoop to anything so plebian or pedestrian as poetry which rhymes). ;D

Were you present at Stewart/Colbert
Fake event on National Mall?
A travesty - but they do not care.
A cheap public stunt, that is all.

(Next three verses: Stewart in regular print, Colbert in parenthesis)

Although the rally got me lots of note,
(You know I'd never mock - those who govern our land)
My main plan was trashing Glenn Beck.
(I'd never make fun of Congress - no way!)
I got my wish wish! I got the right's goat!
(You saw my "testimony" to the Congress)
If you missed it - you're a redneck!
(Damn! I am so good - a true genius me!)

Uncounted thousands of fans showed en masse,
(For you people can't see - I've only one joke)
Come to party and smoke a joint.
(One character - just one bit of shtick!)
A modern day Woodstock - devoid of class.
(I'm only on - 'cause Stewart is my friend)
My message? There isn't a point!

But there was one point - I realized I was missing:
(I an so clever - a true comic icon)
Those before us were the real thing.
(You have no clue that I'm screwing with you)
It wasn't just Beck and friends I was dissing.
(And I'll chuckle smugly as to the bank I'm strutting!)
This mocked all - even Doctor King!

What resulted from Stewart/Colbert?
Did it energize O.'s young base?
We doubt it, but it gave us a scare.
How'd we fall to such a low place?

If Stewart and/or Colbert are offended, I invite them to appear on my show..."Cleaning Our House And Cars With The Ribbers"! ;D

I'm an old man and I love the Daily Show. Although I watched much of the rally, it was hit or miss. Unlike this parody, which is a hit.

You might think the writer of TOS was unable or unwilling to rhyme, but Mr. Simon might argue that "thyme" and "mine" rhyme. In any case I commend you for making your parody rhyme cleverly; but, because of your extra wish, I am reducing your score to 4.8.

Thanks all. John J - you can come on our show too, but you'd probably be a bigger hit than OLR and I. ;D

I missed this one yesterday. Love that OS and the verses in parenthesis added to the other ones are hard to coordinate. 5's

Was I blowing off Stewart/Colbert?
Partly age, dozed various times.
Remember, GB's was one great affair.
Soon, we'll see his true love's Goldline.

Wish I'd bought some at $555. ;-)
