A strange line popped into my head the other day, so I had to write a song around it. See if you can figure out which line was the "Genesis" for this "Apocalyptic" tale

The Prince of Darkness did extend
An invitation to attend
A pit of lava with flames leaping
Where tormented souls were weeping
And the vision of the agony and pain
I retain
My journey to Inferno

Through darkened halls I walk alone
Voices of the tortured moan
Eternal concentration camp
I wear a collar rusty, cold and damp
And then my eyes were stabbed and I nearly lost my sight
Imps lunged to smite
A piercing scream--of violence

Midst the naked throng I saw
Princes and paupers beaten raw
From scabs and bruises pus streaming
Blades of vengeance swords were glistening
While the saints above cool water may not share
A chasm there
No one's allowed to cross it

"Prince", said I, "May I please go?"
As cancer eats away my nose
"Hear my plea for I beseech you"
A thousand others screech, too
But our words like bloody droplets fell
And then the depths of hell went silent

And the people bowed and prayed
For a glass of lemonade
All were dressed in black for mourning
As a lake of fire was forming
Heed not the words of the prophets and you are bound to fall
For Lucifer's call
Next year I think I'll stay--in Kansas!

I tried to rhyme match every line except the last line in each stanza. Just not that many good words to rhyme with "silence". And, in the original, that line does not rhyme with anything above it.

Yeah, there's undoubtedly weeping and gnashing of teeth in Hell. Probably no mourning, though, except in self-pity; it's not as if anybody down there is the least bit repentant. Also, Satan and company are tormented along with everyone else; nobody's running this prison.

Certain parts of Kansas City have come to resemble the scenes described here. Except that it's much colder. Rob, I one time posted a song by mistake before I finished it. Then I posted the completed version the next day. So this is actually 249. Not sure what I'll do for the actual 250, but I hope you all like it as much as you did this one. By the way, I had one of those weird lines floating around in my head "The people bowed and prayed, for a glass of lemonade". When I was a kid, anytime me or some other kid would say we wanted something, an adult would answer "Folks in Hell want ice water".

In Dante's better-known version of the story, (also rendered in pop song canto-by-canto by my grandson), ice and slush figure as prominently as fire in the punishment of the inmates of the various levels. So, your suggestion that Kansas is the antithesis of Hell is incorrect. Otherwise, glad to see you hopping aboard Charon's boat.

Looking back over the years, perhaps the version of "Sounds of Silence" by Disturbed would be an even better match for the lyrics.
