The Lyrics

John McCain is my name and in Vietnam I was in chains
Although I’m fairly insane, I’m runnin’ a great campaign!
In the winter of '69, I was hungry, kept barely alive
I was in pain at Hanoi Hotel
Oh, but last night was my version of pure hell…

The night Obama kicked me down
And all my bells were ringin'
Last night Obama kicked me down
And all the mud I was slingin'
I said lie after lie, lie, lie,
Lie lie and lie and lie lie lie lie

Back with my wife Ms. Cindy Lou
And one day she said “Hey, you…,
"John-John, quick come see!
I just bought house number 13!"
Now I don't mind, she gives me wood
And I don't care, ‘cuz her money's so good
Just take what I need and leave the rest
But in this campaign, it’s Palin who’s got the chest!

Last night Obama kicked me down
And all my bells were ringin'
Last night Obama kicked me down
And my poll numbers were sinkin'
They went down, down, and down down down,
Down down and down and down and down down

Like my father before me, I'm a Navy man
And like Joe Lieberman for me, I take a rebel stand
I’m like a Bushie, see, proud and brave
But Ohio looks to be my grave
I swear by the blood that swells my cheeks
You can't raise McCain back up when he's indiscreet…

Last night Obama kicked me down
And all my polls were stinkin’
Last night Obama kicked me down
And all the people were thinkin'
They said, “John’s done and Palin too,
Go back to shootin’ moose in Wazoo…"

"You can't raise McCain back up when he's indiscreet…"--great word switch!

Matches the defeated tone of the original song, catches the rhymes and wording, too. A fine parody, indeed.

Much better than the pundits' summations.

Well, it's a little unfair--but it's a hoot! I vote 5-5-5!

alvin: Thanks, man, you know I admire your stuff. Agrimorfee: Glad you enjoyed it, it was very off-the-cuff in imitation of McCain's slightly wacky style. MasonR: Thanks, the whole song was basically a buildup to that one line. Patrick: Thanks for your comment. I hope the defeated tone turns into reality on November 4. JB: sometimes I wonder what the pundits are watching. Most polls showed Obama won all three debates, and the pundits bend over backward to make it seem like a tie every time. Melanie: unfair is what parody writing is all about! Thank you and please vote on Nov. 4, everybody.

This would have been just fine if not for making light of a US military warrior who suffered dearly for his country and your freedom. How could you even compare pure hell to a campaign defeat over what he endured in Hanoi and call the election defeat worse. This first verse is as bad or worse than what Jane Fonda did by betraying those POWs who just wanted to get a message out. Your lack of empathy in the first verse ruined what could have been a decent parody. The first verse makes this whole thing pretty much suck. I won't dignify this mess with a vote. Ones are too good for it. This parody shows what an ingrate the author is. You could at least appreciate the sacrifice even though it was a most unpopular war, it was war just the same and a lot of people served during that time because they had a choice of dodging the draft by being cowardly and running to Canada or joining the military and take their chances for their country, right or wrong. Freedom is not free - there is always a price to pay for it although we all don't pay the price.

I know freedom isn't free. It costs a buck-o-five, last I checked.

Made me laugh, even though I believe the outcome of that election was an unmitigated disaster
