The Lyrics

We're about the celebrate the 20th anniversary of this, so I couldn't resist.
Gorbachev is the name,
And I was the President
'Till the Eastern Bloc all rebelled.
Now I’m just a resident.

In the autumn of '89,
We all knew it was the end of the line.
November the 9th, Berlin, it fell,
It's a time I remember, oh so well.

The night they tore the Big Wall down,
In the East they were screaming.
The night they tore the Big Wall down,
In the West they were singing.
They went, “ja, ja, ja, ja, ja, ja, ja,
ja, ja, ja, ja, ja, ja, ja, ja!”

Back with Raisa in Crimea,
I thought it was a prank.
"Misha, quick, on TV, Misha,
Boris is on a tank!"

Now, I don't mind if the people vote,
And I must admit that my government’s broke,
So while I’m tempted to say what the heck,
That madman’s gonna lead us to a train wreck!

The night they tore the Big Wall down,
In the East they were screaming.
The night they tore the Big Wall down,
In the West they were singing.
They went, “ja, ja, ja, ja, ja, ja, ja,
ja, ja, ja, ja, ja, ja, ja, ja, ja!”

Just like Brezhnev before me,
I am an atheist.
And like dear Putin above me,
He ruled with an iron fist.

I’m almost 80, old and wise,
My nation unraveled before my eyes.
I swear by the tsars through the centuries,
My countrymen just can’t handle liberty!

No cute one line review this time, for this is the best parody I've seen since joining this site! It's all here...the clever spoofing, accurate history, and truly funny content make me jealous. Thanks, Michael ;D

Brings back the euphoria of the time. How well I remember the joy of victory for the enslaved masses of Eastern Europe, finally able to exercise the basic rights all people should have. The TV ads played "Ode to Joy" from Beethoven's 9th Symphony. I like how you turned a song of despair and defeat into a lesson on how to win over tyranny. May America learn that lesson and bring down the walls that are enslaving us.

Three cheers for yer Great Wall-song of Rhyma

This is pretty good. I don't remember much about the fall of the Berlin Wall except for the nonstop news coverage on TV, but this still deserves 5s.

I remember it oh-so-well myself! And *always* well worth remembering again :D

Yep, those were inspiring times. And, despite all attempts to re-write history, in addition to honoring all those brave men and women who stood up against tyranny, a tip of the hat to the pope, the gipper, and the iron lady for helping to make that happen. 555's to each and all!

"General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!"

Wish tribute to Ronnie had been included, as he was instrumental -- the Germans honored him with a plaque at the site -- but still, nice tribute to a momentous moment in the history of the fight for freedom. Too bad we're losing it at home, here in the US of A. 555 -- Tommy Turtle

meta and RR impersonator -- agreed, though I think it's kind of implied as the parody was written from Gorby's perspective. And you notice, none of the three mentioned by meta ever received the Nobel Peace Prize.

Which shows how politicized the Nobel can be.
