Song Parodies -> "Chemistry"

Original Song Title:

"Yesterday"

Original Performer:

The Beatles

Parody Song Title:

"Chemistry"

Parody Written by:

Phil Alexander

The Lyrics

A blatant plagiarism of Jon Clemence's excellent Chemistry parody, but putting the other side of the story (half of my degree was in chemistry, so I'm kind of biased)
Chemistry
I just synthesised some TNT
But I blew up the laborat'ry
It's so much fun, is chemistry

Putting in
Nitric acid and some glyerine
Add sulphuric to make it begin
Whoopie! Nitroglyerine

Why I had to go
Now I know
It had to be
I made something wrong
Yes, a bomb
In chemistry

Chemistry
Love that subject, it's been good to me
It's much better than geography
It's so much fun is chemistry

mm mm mm mm mm-KABOOM!

Hi Phil :) 4/5/4. I liked how you used chemicals in the parody, but some parts of it seem forced. I sang it to myself and it didn't feel quite right. But I liked the idea :)

IKWYM, Rice- the second verse is about as far off the money as I ever get: but hey, it's chemically accurate and I'm no Tom Lehrer ;-) ...and I did make myself laugh with the "mm mm mm mm mm-KABOOM!" bit at the end :-)

Darn good parody. Of course, for best use of chemical names in a parody, you have to see "The Chemist's Drinking Song," at http://www-cs.canisius.edu/~salley/Bard.book/chemist.html

Nice imagination, but if you really want to build a bomb, just continue posting this piece.

They should have Dexter sing this song in one of them Laboratory cartoons. ;) I know because my nickname is Dexter. My friends call me that.

neminem - - though if you like the Chemist's Song, you might also like this one: http://www.amiright.com/parody/misc/gilbertandsullivan0.shtml

My daughter only liked the line "It's so much better than geography", as she doesn't go for geog. either.

Michael: I've got a synthesis path for C4 here somewhere... but it doesn't scan that well (and would take more like Bohemian Rhapsody in length :-) )
Rice Cube - February 21, 2003 - Report this comment
Phil, if you can do a parody about synthesizing C4, or any chemical or biological pathway, I will pay tribute to you in parody.

Rice, have you come across "The Biochemist's Songbook", can't remember who it's by? There's a dozen biochemical pathways in parody, including the Krebs Cycle, the semiosmotic theory of oxidative phosphorylation (i.e. ADP->ATP, to the tune of the Eton Boating song - it's the only one I remember most of), photosynthesis and a loads more. All very clever stuff.

Thought you might appreciate this...the songs are American-ish but the humor and nerditude is what's most important ;-) http://www.departments.bucknell.edu/chemistry/courses/chem212/songs/
