The Lyrics

Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf just got handed a well-deserved political defeat in Monday's General Election. With any luck he won't stick around too long, although he's clearly a clever fellow and has shown remarkable survival skills in the past. But he may have overplayed his hand with the Bhutto assassination. The reference here to "Sheikh Rashid" is to his former railways minister, Sheikh Rashid Ahmed, who lost his election and high-tailed it to Spain on a midnight plane. Here's hoping for some peace, stability and expanded freedoms for the Pakistani people in the aftermath of this drama.
Need a quick ticket for the midnight plane
Take my ass and go to Old Spain
Think I’d best be gone
I’ve been overthrown
Sheikh Rashid; he lost his election

I’m one sad Punjabi because the trend
Says that my rule here has come to an end
Guess I should have known
Stayed around too long
'Cause the people here want things to be better

Yeah, they hope things get better
They want me to leave; so “out” I must go
Been dismissed; I’ll be relieved – been given the “sack”
For my safety; must go - far away

Need to split quickly; I cannot remain
Say, “bye-bye”, and catch that last plane
Lost bad at the polls
Time to head on home
It seems I’ve out-stretched my tether

Well, I stole at my pleasure
Uncle Sam still gave me piles of more dough
Was remiss and now it seems I can’t turn my back
Since the death of Bhutto; a misplay

Grabbin’ my britches; I head for that plane
Not the time to stop and explain
Things have turned out wrong
People want me gone
‘Cause our people; they want things to be better
Because our people; they want things to get better

Great parody Paul. This line is bidchin':

Since the death of Bhutto; a misplay

It is the fault of the Reagan administration, albeit a stopgap at the time, that the Pakis have nukes. The Soviets were engaged in war in Afghanistan starting around 1979. Their goal was to sweep through Afghanistan and then into Pakistan in order to have a warm water port on their expansion to the south. Two things happened that have set the stage for what we have today. Pakistan was given nukes to deter the Soviets that was at the time in our best interest and the US backed Bin Laden and the Taliban who were keeping the Soviets at bay. If the Soviets gained a warm water port they could deploy their Navy 12 months per year instead of around 7 1/2 to 8. This gave us an edge over them as far as naval power determinates were concerned at the time.

And yes indeed Pervez Musharraf has excellent survival skills. He best get on that plane as you suggest. I would not be surprised to see him exile himself as soon as the smoke clears and you can say "I told you so"! Great write Paul. Fives are the order of the day for this gem.

Thanks, Guy! Glad you liked it. I haven't posted many in a while although I've been writing. This came to me while I was reading the Election results story and saw the part about Sheikh Rashid hopping on a midnight plane to Spain. alvin - Thanks!

Thanks, JJ ~ ~ ~ Er...what was the other one? I haven't had time to be around much at all lately what with Income Tax Season in full & crazy swing this year.

Thank you for asking, Paul. In my humble opinion, this, http://www.amiright.com/parody/misc/gilbertsullivan67.shtml, is the other one. Yes, I just noticed that this is your first parody of 2008 - you have been working hard.

Darn good stuff! You obviously grasped the significance of the news stories about the changes in Pakistan and found the right song and lyrics to give a sense of this one guy who, like a cartoon character, is skeedaddling outta there. I ain't lying.
