The Lyrics

C. Auguste Dupin, a fictional character created by Edgar Allan Poe, who made his first appearance in Poe's 1841 short story “The Murders in the Rue Morgue,” widely considered the first detective-fiction tale.

Dupin, Poe’s creation, what a dude.
Preceded Holmes, and not as rude.

Holmes was a Brit, while Dupin was a Frenchman,
but the both of them made deductions trenchant.
Province of Dupin was Paris, where he was
cluin’ on crimes on the avenues;
one such took place in a famous Rue.

Case perplexed Paris constabulary;
they brought him in to see what he could see.
At that point they had to admit defeat, so

Dupin came and examined the room
where the poor victim had met his doom.
Mort, mort, so mort.

Not one of them would make fun of his ways,
because he showed such deductive displays.
In the end he would look at them and say:
“What you all have missed, see: It’s an ape that’s guilty.”

Provin’ once again: He ruled the roost
among cops, with heads up the caboose.
D’oh, d’oh, d’oh d’oh!

Dupin shows them all up.
