The Lyrics

Iran continues to enrich uranium despite increased UN sanctions. Obama just met with Netanyahu to smooth over perceived friction. But who will "bell the cat" to prevent Iran from becoming a nuclear threat? It's becoming clear that Israel must act alone, unlike the Multi-Lateral Force once arrayed against the Soviet Union. CHFUDNKTOS.
Sleep, Jewry, sleep, increasing in number, [1]
Though danger lurks, your sleep to encumber.
You've got some missiles, quelling incursion,
But wonder still lingers 'bout that nutty shill (he's Persian).

Why shouldn't they have nuclear missiles?
UN says "No," as they blow their whistles. [2]
I say rely on the strength of Zion;
Don't make peace the way you did with Arafat the lion. [3]

Once Persian leaders held captives with glee, [4]
But that couldn't happen again.
They paused building weapons in 2003, [5]
And they've hardly bothered you since then.

So sleep well, Israelis, but sandstorms remember; [6]
We hope their mullahs won't leave you an ember.
While hale your Air Force, convene brave crews who'll dare.
Bailed your once-loyal ally.
Sanctions rude won't scare Mahmoud;
I hope that Obama shares the sky! [7]
[1] Refers to new housing developments on "Palestinian land".
[2] Like umpires at a sports event, they don't play.
[3] He shook hands with Yitzhak Rabin at the Oslo Summit in 1993. The lion shall lie. Down with the lamb!
[4] US embassy employees were hostages for 444 days until January 20, 1981.
[5] As reported later in the US National Intelligence Assessment.
[6] A land invasion may be thwarted by the desert, as was the 1980 US rescue attempt.
[7] He once threatened to intercept Israeli aircraft if they attacked Iran's nuclear facilities, and not to sell replacements.

I well remember the original, and this is a worthy take. ;D

Better fits to TOS are "ceasing" for "quelling" and "nut-job" for "nutty".

Nice job bringing the OS up to date in spirit, humor and, alas, accuracy.

You sure put up a good fight with this one, Barry! Love how you put humor into your famous polit-odies! 555.

Believe you're right about Israel having to take unilateral--as opposed to UNilateral--action.

Thanks to all who commented. I would have responded sooner but for a bout with stomach flu.
Lehrer was a superb humorist without malice (ingredients for persuasion without stirring anger). His template gave me the chance to skewer, in a mere 18 lines, Ahmedinejad, the UN, Khomeini, Clinton, the US CIA, Carter, Khameini and Obama. Thanks, Tom!
