Original Performer:

Parody Song Title:

"Galling Skin Game"

Parody Written by:

John A. Barry

The Lyrics

“The Skin Game” (1931); The print from which this was dup’d was of poor quality, along with “Secret Agent” and “Number 17.” The lousy sound combined with the British accents frequently made comprehending the dialogue difficult or impossible. This lackluster effort, based on a play by John B. Galsworthy, is about two feuding families and the lengths they go to achieve their respective objectives.
Each has a fear he may fall
In the galling skin game.
This is no wonderful game,
Part of which is luck.
He[1] has words with him;[2]
His chances are looking slim—
Looks like he
Is really out of luck.

Fortunes reverse for them all
In the Gals-ing skin game.
Now all the luck’s on his side;
He’s not beat today,
Because out news slips:
His daughter-in-law[3] used to turn tricks,
So a blackmail game she[4] plays.

So Chloe drowned herself and died. . .
The game gone astray.
Now they come to grips
With what comes when they place all their chips
On the dang’rous game they play.

[1]Edmund Gwen (Captain Wiles in “The Trouble with Harry”; Rowley in “Foreign Correspondent”; Johann Strauss in “Waltzes from Vienna,” a.k.a. “Strauss’ Great Waltz”; one role in “Alfred Hitchcock Presents”), patriarch of the Hornblower clan
[2]C.V. France, head of the Hillcrists
[3]Chloe, daughter-in-law of Mr. Hornblower, as played by Phyllis Konstam (Doucie Markham in “Murder!”)
[4]Mrs. Hillcrist (Helen Haye, Mrs. Jordan in “The 39 Steps”)

JAB - May I recommend another movie called Skin Game (James Garner, Lou Gossett, Susan Clark). Oh, 5-5-5 for the education as well. :)
