The Lyrics

Today, March 15, 2010, ABBA is being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. Fittiingly enough, TOS was their first #1 hit in major markets. OS video here.

TT had already "honored" them last week, if one can call this piece of trash an "honor" ;) Expect more honors, and be warned of possible further trashing, during this week.

To-day, in Rock and Roll, at Hall of Fame, did they enter
Oh, yeah! And they were yet the best to me, did brighten 70s day
Among highest sales on the shelf [1]
Their music: it speaks for itself!

ABBA, who? Anni-Frid Lyngstad; Ulvaeus, Björn
Andersson, Benny; Fältskog, Anna; group was born
Capitals? All their initials, did name construe
Acronym: Anni-frid, Benny, Björn, Anna, too [2}
Hall of Fame: finally getting their rightful due

My, my, They toured the world and back, but how much longer?
Divorce! -- Sometimes it seems success-romance just never turn out right
Though who could great fortune, refuse? --
-- Although wealth, you win; love, you lose [3]

Wonderful: First Europeans, our charts, to score [4]
Durable: Records still selling; new fans, adore [5]
Generous: copyright donated; UNICEF [6]
East and down: Australia: great tour; Japan's was, too
Now we know: how many folks to fill Albert Hall [7]

And if you feel down with the blues
Their music is better than booze! [8]

ABBA tunes: From cassette tape to CD-ROM, go you
ABBA, true: Highly you rate for each song you do
ABBA crew: World-wide, succeeded, like very few
ABBA, your -- faithful fans ne'er will forget your name
ABBA, Wooh! Finally gracing the Hall of Fame

[1] Record sales figures can be very inaccurate; promoters inflate them to boost a group's image. Best guess, based on reputed worldwide sales: Fourth, behind Beatles, Elvis, Michael Jackson.

[2] If the greatest mystery in life has been why the band's name was capitalized, we are very pleased to have ended the quest.
Besides, lower-case Abba is also the name of a well-known fish-canning company in Sweden....

[3] The Ulvaeus-Fältskog marriage ended in 1979; the Andersson-Lyngstad marriage in 1981.

[4] First group from mainland Europe (i. e., not the British Isles) to achieve consistent success througout the Anglophone world (i. e., those countries where the phones transmit only English).

[5] Reportedly still selling 2-3 million albums a year.

[6] January 9, 1979, the group performed "Chiquitita" at the Music for UNICEF** Concert. ABBA donated the copyright to UNICEF. The single was released the following week, and reached #1 in ten countries.
Unfortunately, it was also parodied by a certain disrespectful pair-o-dissed-s, and will be posted this week. ("Fair and Balanced", we like to call it ;)

**Originally, United Nations International Children's Emergency Fund, now known by that acronym, but by the shorter name, United Nations Children's Fund.

[7]
(Tommy Turtle takes sole blame for this atrocious mash-up -- is Fiddlegirl a saint, or what?)
From The Beatles' "A Day in the Life": "Now they know how many holes it takes to fill the Albert Hall."
In 1977, the group gave two concerts at London's Royal Albert Hall. Tickets for these shows were available only by mail application, and it was later revealed that the box office received 3.5 million requests for tickets, enough to fill the venue 580 times over.

[8] If you're feeling down, try "Take A Chance On Me" or "Dancing Queen" (yes, that parody's coming) and see if the ol' flippers don't start flappin'.

Mama mia, what a nice reminder of ABBA. When all is said and done, they were great singers, even if the hard rock snobs looked down upon them. Looking forward to "Chiquitita". I never really understood that song until I heard Charro sing it (in Spanish) on the Johnny Carson Show. I believe the first song by ABBA that I was aware of was "Fernando". I thought they were Spanish because of their accents and the way they phrased the line "since many years I haven't seen a rifle in your hand" which is how a Spanish speaker would phrase it in English. There was a story that when ABBA would perform in Eastern European countries where the local currency was not convertible, they would request payment in grain or oil, or some form of tangible goods. Ever hear that?

I never listened to ABBA until my wife went to see Mama Mia and got the CD (both the movie version and ABBA's). Nice work on this OS.

Nice Tributetu, a band that made a song called Waterloo!! Several years ago, they were ALL offered 1 Billion each to do a reunion tour, AND THEY TURNED IT DOWN!!!

Many, many thanks to OMR, Dan Creeden, Patrick, T1K (Where've you been, man?) ;), CC: It's a hard ABBAt to break... ;) [LOL @ Lady gABBA], and, thanks to the ever-amiable Mark Scotti [Turned down $1 billion each- really? They must *hate* each other...]

Mama mia's pizzeria, its a nice parody of ABBA.

OMR: Will probably do that one, too..
Fred Flintstone: WILMA!!!.....

Patrick: I was quite impressed at the Spanish accents, even putting a "J" in "years" (jears") as one with a thick Spanish accent would do. (and ditto the Sp syntax in that line, and others.) I didn't hear your rumor, but I'd heard that early on, their English wasn't good, and they'd sing from phonetic lyrics. Probably not true -- did you ever hear that one?

Timmy1000: Ditto FG -- missed ya!

CC: ABBAloney! ... and I consider the Lady G line an insult to FG, though that's just MHO. ;) Maybe you should be taking GABBA to calm you down? Or a benzo with gABBA-receptor agonist activity?

Mark Scotti: It was to tour 100 cities, so that's "only" $10 million per city, split four ways, so we're talking, what, 2.5 million each, per city? Minus agent fees, etc. .. And all that traveling... Chump change. ;) ..
Seriously, at some point, you have all the money that you could ever spend, and at their age, and marital problem baggage, perhaps they just didn't feel up to it...
Besides, wouldn't the Swedish gov have taken more than half of it in taxes, and the US and other countries taken their share as well? Probably have about $1.98 left over.
(side note: had heard that that was why the Beatles wrote "Taxman": the top bracket in the UK was *95%* at the time; hence the line "Here's one for you, nineteen for me" -- how to convert a socialist into a capitalist very quickly: Let him get rich, then take it all away ;)

Phil Nelson: A real "slice of life", eh? :)

Thanks for the note - I've actually been vacationing for a few weeks without much computer access. I just got back and am getting ready a St. Pat's day post.

I love ABBA's music! One of my friends I used to go to school with was named Abigail, but they called her "Abby" because her parents were die hard ABBA fans, so she was named after the band and loved it! My parents also used to own an 8-track with a bunch of 8-tracks of ABBA as well as vinyl records. My fave band member is Anna (Agnetha). A "Waterloo" of 5's!

Timmy1000: I assume you were in Tierra del Fuego or the middle of Siberia -- hard to think of anywhere else without internet access, and they should still have satellite ;) -- Hope you enjoyed your vacation, and of course looking forward to your songs.

AFW: Thanks.

Christie Marie M: LOL @ friend! Ahh, 8-tracks -- even before cassette tape. Was thinking of using 8-track tape in that line, but thought, naah, not very many will remember them. Thanks for v/c!

I heard they wrote their own songs. Can't do that unless you're raised with English from childhood. I always thought most Scandinavians were taught English from elementary school. Not sure who wrote the Spanish lyrics for "Gracias por la Música" LP.
TT @ Patrick - March 16, 2010 - Report this comment
I knew that early on, they wrote their own songs in Swedish. True that many Europeans learn English as a second language. It was possible that they weren't comfortable enough to sing it at first, but it was just a rumor, back at the time -- probably by a jealous competitor. You can write songs in a second language that you weren't raised with from childhood, though they might not be very good, like this one:

http://www.amiright.com/parody/60s/jayandtheamericans17.shtml
on which you commented in Spanish, very fluently (graciás).
Patrick - March 16, 2010 - Report this comment
I actually wrote a song in German once. It's a humorous national anthem for the tiny Principality of Liechtenstein. Not a parody, as far as I know, so I've never posted it here. I work at a job where I handle German documents, so I've learned a bit of the written language over the years.
Tommy Turtle - March 16, 2010 - Report this comment
I studied German in school, too, and got somewhat fluent in it, but it's gotten very rusty. The Spanish seems to get a lot more practice these days -- go figure! ;)
