"Boise State's Broken Dream"

Parody Written by:

Edward Genereux

The Lyrics

From the disco opera "TCU." As I ponder with the TCU coaches and players about what to do concerning their imminent BCS title game snub, the phone rings and I answer. The first part--before Stanza I--is the beginning of my conversation with Boise State head coach Chris Petersen, who coached the Broncos to a 43-42 overtime upset of Oklahoma in the 2007 Fiesta Bowl. Now, however, he is equally distressed (as much as the Horned Frogs) over being denied a spot in the national title chase in favour of big name schools. The delegations of the two schools mourn their humiliation together as 1700 hours (Central Time, 5:00 P.M. in 12-hour time)--the time of the BCS Selection Show on FOX--approaches. I originally intended to write about Cincinnati's snub; but when you look at it, they didn't beat one BCS-bound team during the season. Boise, on the other hand, beat Rose Bowl-bound Oregon. Hence my decision to change the theme of this third parody from ABBA's Voulez-Vous album.
Spoken prelude.
Edward Genereux: The letter has been sent to BCS headquarters near Kansas City. Let's not cry anymore, but rather--(The phone rings) Well, I might as well answer. (picks up the phone) Hello? Who is this?

Voice: It's Boise State University head football coach Chris Petersen. We hear you're mourning with TCU about their snub.

Edward: Yes, I am.

Chris Petersen (sobbing): We're mourning too! We aren't even sure about our BCS prospects since the commission only has to select one midmajor. What will we do?

Edward. Well, just talk it out and I'll try to formulate a solution.
(Music starts up)

Stanza I. (Petersen)
Our broken dream was but to play
A full week after New Year's Day.
But instead, the big schools had to have their way
With the bowl selections; heaven please help me!
I don't even know now if the BCS will us admit;
The rule of one midmajor, it ain't nothing but a piece of shit.
I'll tell my team: Broke is our dream.

Stanza II. (Edward)
Your broken dream is not in vain;
I do believe you'll win again.
In whatever bowl game they should give to you,
Keep your perfect record perfect through and through.
I believe you'll do well; I believe that you can get the win
'Cos whate'er opponent that you get you will quite quickly pin.
I'll help redeem your broken dream. (last line 2x)

Stanza III. (Gary Patterson, TCU head coach)
This broken dream will certainly
Affect the course of history
Of all college football, 'specially the bowls.
May this dream that's broken once again be whole.
We will get a playoff to determine who will be the champ
By the time next season does begin with autumn training camp.
We will redeem this broken dream. (last line 2x; second time, all three sing)
In the next song, which parodies "Summer Night City" (a previously unreleased track from the 2001 remaster, which I am using for the original songs), I shift the scene to BCS headquarters near Kansas City, Missouri.

Very good spoof on the unfortunate plight of two midmajor powerhouses. At the end of last year, I parodied Congress' threat to intervene in the BCS debacle, so I look forward to your next song.

I myself have seen that parody of "Be Our Guest" from Beauty and the Beast that you posted, John. Have you seen the first two parodies from my endeavour? They are "As Sad as Suh" and the title parody, "TCU."
