The Lyrics

Yes, I still write parodies. No, I haven't been around here in a while. No, I'm not sure how often I'll be posting, I'm actually pretty busy with work these days. Anyway, I thought it just might be time to drop in and lay a little of my political thoughts on you. Honestly, I just don't see how anybody could think John McCain should be President. There are a lot of reasons, but I ask you to note and acknowledge that the future lies in front of us...it will occur whether we are prepared for it or not, so it's up to us to either move forward and embrace it or pull back in fear because it is new and unfamiliar. We cannot afford to stand in place and mark time. I guarantee that if we do that "Time" will not be kind to us. Give it some thought, if you will...hope you enjoy my piece. Thanks for looking in.
[instrumental intro – piano, then other instruments]

So historical that it does move me
That this country may elect this guy
Could be going to White House, that’s quite a story
Never thought I’d see, guy

Thought his chances were none
but he’s built a following
Have no doubt about him now today
Obama’s task will be to raise us
after Dubyah’s gone away
Nothing’s clearer than that

Next President must face these questions
Things are f*cked up; it alarms us, sir
Now what follows is immense; must switch direction
Which way will we be steered?

Dubyah’s crew appalls
fear confused us all
Need new leadership; it’s overdue
Amazed to see that in my life
that Dr King’s dream may come true
Wish that he could see that

[instrumental break]

On Election Day guess we’ll see
Will we rise? Decline?
Now our future; it pleads
for common sense
once these fools leave
So long fakers
we’ll finally wave you “Good-bye”
Take your rear ends and “scat”

[longer instrumental break]

Just a warning, son; look towards the future
With some luck prejudice will be gone
When you’re voting make your choice the best; consider
you must pick the right one

To beat John McCain
on Election Day
pick this winner; he’s got poise and brains
I think the time is right, believe, sir
that we try a brand new way
And then cheer for Barack…

Don’t let fear hold you back...

[Long instrumental out to end fade]
FYI - Before posting I checked to make sure this concept hadn't been used here before and I noticed someone used a somewhat similar title back in May, 2007, but upon reading I could see it was nothing at all like my piece.

Good to see you Paul. Miss you here, notwithstanding your comments above, would still like to see more from you :)

Jason - Thanks! Per - Well, I didn't figure everybody would agree, but it's my considered opinion, and I didn't just pull it out of my butt. I won't argue the relative merits of the candidates right here and now. I doubt I would change anybody's mind anyway, and I've got a whole lot of stuff to do here at work right now. Teaching a class in 45 minutes and working with our other Tax Analysts creating an On-line Tax Class a little after the class is over. So I'm stretch-out time-wise. I've got a whole boat load of fully finished unposted parodies sitting around, but not really a lot of time to spend on the site, so I don't know how often I will be posting.

Well, I do agree, particularly because I'm no fan of John McCain. . .5s on principle

I bock Barack, too...good job
Paul Robinson - August 05, 2008 - Report this comment
Thanks, AFW - I've been impressed with him. I don't agree on every issue, but I realize that if there was a candidate whose positions were the same as mine they would NEVER get elected in a General Election ~ ~ ~

Hi Paul, I just meant I would like to see you back more often! When I said nothwithstanding your comments, I was referring to the comments about you not being back often! I specifically didn't comment on the parody content as, being an Aussie, I mercifully feel no compulsion to have a particular opinion about it! I wasn't having go at your views at all! :)

Per - hey, it's cool. I wasn't upset, I'm OK with people disagreeing...and I did think you were. But re-reading my intro statements and your reaction I can see exactly where the disconnect occurred. And let me toss in a moment of total candor and say that I was poised & prepared to deal with someone calling me out on my political comment, because it's actually a rather mild statement compared to my actual take on the campaign. No harm occurred, but I am glad you clarified your comment for me. I've just been too busy to post a piece for tomorrow...I don't go on-line at home anymore at this point, so it's a little bit of an inconvenience to put stuff up.

Hi Paul :-) While personally, I'd say the choice of candidates is a no-brainer, it's sad that McCain's obviously realized that he can't win a straight fight and is taking the dirty route already. The shame is that it appears to be working at the moment, if today's headlines are to be beleived :-(
Phil Alexander - August 06, 2008 - Report this comment
oops... /beleived/believed
Paul Robinson - August 06, 2008 - Report this comment
Phil, yes, it is a shame, but it's not totally unexpected. However, I do believe that Obama will eventually prevail in November, although it looks like it's going to be way closer than it ought to be. I've studied the State-by-State polls and it appears that Obama has fairly substantial leads that would give him 264 Electoral Votes, and a reasonably good looking situation in Colorado (9 EV), where he was leading by about 3% in the polls the other day. That would get him over the 270 needed. Also, Florida (27 EV), Ohio (20 EV) and Virginia(13 EV) are all very close and he could take any or even all of those. There are also a couple small states where McCain currently holds small leads and seems likely to win, but could be beaten. Still, as I said at the top, if you look at the candidates with open eyes and disregard the scare tactics this shouldn't even be close. Thanks ~ ~ ~

Preaching to the choir. Nice that everyone agrees with your opinion and there is no one around here who does not agree. Convenient or purposeful?
Paul Robinson - October 09, 2008 - Report this comment
"Alexander Jason - August 09, 2008 - Report Preaching to the choir. Nice that everyone agrees with your opinion and there is no one around here who does not agree. Convenient or purposeful?" Does that matter? To use a badly overused phrase, this piece is what it is. I wrote it because it's what I THINK, not because I think it will please (or displease) anyone. Yeah, this piece certainly figured to be popular here, at this particular time and in this particular place. Does that in any way lessen the work? That's something each reader is free to weigh as they form their opinion. So I must take issue with your initial remark. No, I was not...am not, "preaching to the choir". If you (or anyone else reading this, for that matter) wants to take legitimate issue with my positions and can point to a factual error or present an opposing viewpoint that has that can be supported in an honest and non-convoluted manner, well, be my guest. I may not be able to respond immediately, I have plenty of things to take care of at work these days, but I will try and check back here on occasion. I'd thank you for your opinion, but I don't really see one yet....just your conjecture that everyone on the site sits around and waits for my politic decrees so they can nod in agreement. I can assure you from past experience that this is not the case.
