The Lyrics

Here I stand
Firmly resting on the ground
Newton said that what goes up
It must come down
Without it I
Would float up high into the sky
But, I sigh, no I can't fly
I can't fly
And I know why, and I know why

Gravity
It's all around and it holds us down
It's gravity
What's the cause of this weighty force
We have to bear?
It's GM1M2
Over d squared
Gravity
On Jupiter you'd weigh much more
Its gravity
Is so high that
It'd squash you flat
It's one to avoid
But you could jump clean off
A small asteroid

Night and day
Gravity won't go away
Knowing that
You can work out just what you weigh
Calculate
The ratio of mass to weight
Approximately 9.8
9.8 (pi squared is great
To approximate)

Gravity
It's all around and it holds us down
It's gravity
What's the cause of this weighty force
We have to bear?
It's GM1M2
Over d squared
Gravity
On Jupiter you'd weigh much more
Its gravity
Is so high that
It'd squash you flat
It's one to avoid
But you could jump clean off
A small asteroid

Gravity etc.

I like this one. Very Tom Lehrer. You should have been a teacher.
Phil Alexander - November 03, 2003 - Report this comment
A teacher? Like my father and his father before him... I did teach for a couple of years as part of my research contract, long enough to know that I can teach people who want to learn, but don't have the desire to bang my head against the brick wall that is students who don't want to be there in the first place.

I'm flattered by the Lehrer comparison, though: compared to (say) New Math..."base 8 is just like base 10... if you're missing two fingers", I think there's still room for improvement. I'd like to get a portfolio of educational parodies (to go with the techie ones, satirical ones, drink-and-drugs ones etc etc)...

Actually 9.8 is very close to pi^2.
Phil Alexander - October 26, 2004 - Report this comment
Thank you Kat - strangely enough, pi^2 is a better approximation to g than 9.8 is...
Kat - November 04, 2004 - Report this comment
Phil, please don't ask me the actual value of pi^2; it's too long to type.

By the way, sorry I haven't commented in a while, my server's been down.

Phil, where are you?

I'm around fairly frequently... was there anything you wanted answering?
