The original song "25 or 6 to 4" has only three verses. In order to tell my parody's story, I added three more verses.On July 24, 2002, eighteen miners working for the Black Wolf Coal Company descended into the Que (pronounced "kyoo" or "cue") Creek mine in western Pennsylvania. Nine of them were drilling in a tunnel when they accidentally punched a hole into the neighboring abandoned Saxman mine flooded with millions of gallons of water. Rescue workers fought for over three days to save them. They were finally lifted to safety, one by one, in a yellow metal capsule after 77 harrowing hours underground. All nine men survived. This is their story.
July Two Thousand and Two
Que Creek mine's eighteen-man crew
Gathered to begin their shift
They rode down on Black Wolf's lift
Just another working day
Earning their coal miner's pay
Armed with maps no longer true
They began to tunnel through
Suddenly that coal-dark wall
Turned into a waterfall
Icy water roared inside
Ancient Saxman Mine's cruel tide
Liquid ice above their knees
Fahrenheit forty degrees
Nine men ran and got away
Nine men trapped and forced to stay
Found a ledge above the flood
Huddled close to warm their blood
Then from up above somewhere
Came a pipe pumping fresh air
They left last words in a pail
Just in case the rescue failed
For three days and hours five
Nine men fought to stay alive
From above a crunching sound
Rocks and dirt came pouring down
On that ceiling made of coal
There appeared a man-sized hole
Through the hole a capsule burst
Send the weakest men up first
Yellow capsule lifting fast
Snatching men from Reaper's grasp
On the surface, cheering noise
Macho-men cried tears of joy
Shout for joy and thank the Lord

JD - Great, great parody and tribute! Hits close to home, My two grandfathers and my father all were coal miners in the soft coal region of Pennsylvania. My father's father was killed in a coal mining accident. I followed this story closely. A very dangerous occupation and a very special breed of men. Fantastic! Thanks for writing such a fine tribute.
