The Lyrics

This song is about a politician who led the British Conservative Party following the resignation of Theresa May who found great difficulty in resolving the differences of opinion voiced within the UDP and her own Party in the aftermath of the UK referendum over the country's membership of the European Union. Boris Johnson was the MP for Uxbridge and South Ruislip at the time of his election as Party Leader. Sue Gray was the civil servant tasked with investigating his behaviour and somewhat disingenuous explanations of gatherings during periods of severe Covid-related lockdowns. There were also investigations into gatherings of politicians, their staff and advisers undertaken - and sometimes abandoned - by police forces, all under enhanced press scrutiny. Fixed Penalty Notices were served on many people found to have breached lockdown guidance, although no-one under quite as much media scrutiny as that prime minister. Mr. Johnson stepped down as Party leader immediately after sacking Michael Gove for public disloyalty in early July 2022.
Enclosed, is your Fixed Penalty Notice,
Hope you find time to pay the fine.
You raised two fingers to the voters
Serves you right for crossing the red line.

Don't upset Sue Gray or more could come your way,
We know the outcome's not surprisin'

Sue Gray has logged umpteen confessions,
The papers have amplified them all.
You still deny all those transgressions,
Seems like your friends all had a ball.

That behaviour's not okay, we're so grateful to Sue Gray,
We know the outcome's not surprisin'

Soon you'll be missing that wallpaper,
Soon your ambition will be trimmed,
We can't stand your arrogant behaviour,
I sense your star might soon be dimmed.

Don't upset Sue Gray or more could come your way,
We know the outcome's not surprisin'

You trashed your Party's reputation,
You offered donors rich rewards.
Despite his loose grip on education
Gavin was promoted to the Lords.

Your behaviour's not okay, we're so grateful to Sue Gray,
We know the outcome's not surprisin'

You've scoffed more than your share of cake
You blamed the stampede of the herd,
Rediscovered Michael Gove the snake
But no-one can believe what just occurred,

But now it's clear to see, you're a liability,
Your exit didn't need no advertisin'

Fed up with spinning propaganda?
Eager to play down party fines?
Please take the next flight to Rwanda,
You really should have read the warning signs!

So pack your bags and go, with your sprightly kids in-tow,
We know this outcome's not surprisin'
The Gavin reference relates to Sir Gavin Williamson, whom Boris Johnson enobled, meaning that he could attend the House of Lords during the latter period of Johnson's prime ministerial status. As MP for Blackpool North and Fleetwood, Gavin had served within Conservative governments as Defence Secretary and Chief Whip (under Theresa May), and as Education Secretary (under Johnson's leadership). Michael Gove, another Conservative Cabinet member referred to in verse 5, was Secretary of State for Levelling Up, Housing and Communities between 15 September 2021 and 6 July 2022. Before that he served as Chancellor of the Duchy of Lancaster from July 2019. He was also Minister for the Cabinet Office from February 2020 until September 2021. He was Secretary of State for Environment, Food & Rural Affairs from June 2017 to July 2019 having entered the House of Commons as MP for Surrey Heath during 2005. He has considerable experience as a journalist and served as a shadow minister when the Conservatives were in opposition.

The abbreviation mentioned in the preamble should read "DUP," a term explained here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Democratic_Unionist_Party

An update of verse 4 has been prepared given the volatile nature of Westminster politics in 2022.
