The Lyrics

This parody is based on the true life experience I had on my way up North from L.A. to Willits. In writing this I made a special effort to keep site specific & Author name mentions out of it and think I did a rather good job of it (he says with all his usual due modesty). So anyway, I had made plans to stop overnight in San Jose on my way up to Willits, my R & R destination. I got there a couple hours later than I wanted to and had a case of the "Road Travel Bends". Rick & Mari D were going to be playing and I really was looking forward to meeting them and checking out their stuff. I was not disappointed, they were even more personable than they seem on the site and that's quite a lot. Artistically, very sharp, very talented, very funny and more. Anyway, they asked if I would be interested in trying to sing some 3-part harmony to some CSN stuff since I know the songs. I was intrigued and interested, but also somewhat wary; I THINK I have a pretty good voice and I know the lyrics, timing and pace well on many CSN songs, but my experience singing them was mostly by myself to records/tapes/CD's at home and a few karaoke efforts. Quite different from singing live with actual folks; I have a tendency to sing either a sort of "blend" of the harmonies or to sing one part for one verse and then the next verse I might sing a different person's vocal part. Not a good trait for a group harmony singer. I tried briefly with them out in back of the Cafe, but it was quickly apparent it would not work, so I had to decline. Let me hasten to add that I had a FANTASTIC time and I am very much looking forward to this Thursday night (Jan 29th) when I will be stopping in San Jose on my way home and checking them out again (and possibly, hopefully, Elena M. & maybe Bob Gomez). Thanks for bearing with my intro here, hope you enjoy the parody.
(Opening Intro - Instrumental Jam)

Well I met some folks on this here site, and I wanted to see their show
And I asked them "Tell me where could I go", and this they told me:
Said to "come on down to Bascom Street, which is up here in San Jose
Open mic night is when we play, and it's on Thursday"
They're comedians, they are poets, they are funny and they know it
So I went to see them play Espresso Gaaarrrr---dens

They said; "Can you sing a third part?" I said; "Probably not too well,
'cause I really cannot tell which part I should sing."
Yes, I tried to but it was quite clear; yes, I might not have a stage career
I could tell it was all wrong, 'cause that was real easy
They are singers, they're proficient, but my efforts were deficient
And I knew I could not sing there at the Gaaaarrrrr-dens.

(Instrumental jam)

They are singers, they're proficient, but my efforts were deficient
And I knew I could not sing there at the Gaaaarrrrr-dens.

When my friends got up on the stage, all the stuff they did was strong
They did not hit one note wrong by my own reckoning
I had dreamed I could rise up and do great but it was not to be
It was obvious to me; I was no singer
They are talented, and they show it; I am not, but now I know it
So I did not sing that song down at the Gaaaarrrrrr-dens.

("Hot" Instrumental Jamming to End)

Paul - wonderful intro and excellent parody of one of my favorite Jefferson Airplane / CSN tunes!

It's good to hear that you gave singing a try! Guess what, dude? I did too! In my home town here in Concord, Mass., last night I auditioned for The Concord Players' upcoming production of the musical drama based of the events surrounding the signing of the Declaration of Independence, "1776". This is the first time in more than 23 years that I have auditioned for a singing/acting role in a musical. The audition went well - I will find out Saturday morning if they want me to come to call-backs on Sunday.

Once again, I'm moved by the compliment and mention, and trapped by my position on "in-crowd" works. Mari writes very "personal story" works, so I'm okay with those. Since this is about a shared experience outside of the site, I just have to give you fives, but I don't expect too many other people here to feel included in the joke. However, I have been wrong before.

Paul, I don't know this song, but I was laughing at your comments. It really reminds me of my early years with the choir I was in (I quit, they did not suggest that I leave...lol), when I was trying to stick to my own alto part. Those are the exact problems I had. :D

Wow. I *definitely* feel included in the joke, given that I've been to the place several times. Even sung with my dad there a couple times (once at an actual show, which was *awesome* and a couple more times for open mic). So yeah, if Dave Field ever plays there again, you should go see him ;-).

Wow neminem, are you a local? If so, come tonight!
neminem - January 29, 2004 - Report this comment
Semi-local - I'm from Santa Cruz, just over the hill. However, I'm currently at Harvey Mudd College in Claremont, so that would be a bit difficult.

Paul: Great job, and don't be too hard on yourself! You have the guts to go out there and give it at least a try. 555's for the fortitude - and for picking a great tune to use! Johnny D: I LOVE 1776!! In fact, Caesar Rodney is in my direct paternal line (actually, through one of his brothers - he died childless). He is the guy on the first commemorative quarter and has that dramatic (and true) scene in the musical where he breaks the tie in the Delaware delegation. I have the musical on both video and DVD and watch it over and over. In fact, it is a very special shared musical between me and my oldest (22) daughter. I did Jacey Squires in "Music Man" in college and had bit roles in "Oklahoma" and "Pajama Game." Best of luck to you!!! Keep us posted.

Just for the record, we did get Paul to sing when we all got together at "The Garden." It was AFTER the open mic, though, just a bunch of us standing around. What a trip! Johnny -- good luck on your audition! I have enjoyed playing in pit orchestras for musicals; what fun! Neminem -- I think that we may have met, probably at NCSA open mics. We also dropped out of NCSA because comedy songwriters don't really fit in there. Didn't you go once in a while with your dad? And didn't you play guitar or bass with him once? By the way, say hi to him for me. I like his songs. Does he ever write parodies, or is that more your thing?
neminem - January 30, 2004 - Report this comment
Yes, I did go a couple times. Didn't play guitar, though, I'm only a vocalist. And although one would *think* he would write parodies, as he's constantly annoying people with his puns, he hasn't actually ever written a whole one, only fragments. By the way, http://www.fieldmusic.net - you *know* you want to go buy his cd ;-).

Thanks to all for the votes and comments. These will be short comments for me 'cause I'm over at Rick & Mari D's tonight and Rick's showing me around. I had a blast last night at the "Gardens" Bob Gomez and Leah Lockhart were there as well and Rick, Mari, and I. Later...

Paul, it was a great thrill for me to meet you, Leah, Mari and Rick at the Gardens. I say Las Vegas for a Punvention should definitely happen this year. d;:^)

LOL Paul - after I got through that iiiiiiiiiiiiinnnnnnnnnttttttttrrrrrrooooo, I completely forgot what song you were parodying! ;-D

Meriadoc - Been off-line for a bit while pondering what type of PC to purchase, using the Pub. Library on occasion (like now). Yes, my intro(s) sometimes are longer than the song - oft-times my comments are, too. What can I say? Motor-mouth/motor-brain. Adagio - don't know "Woodstock" ? OW! I must be getting REALLY old. It's a Joni Mitchell composition but I parodied the Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young version which was on their 2nd album ("Deja vu"). Glad you enjoyed the comments. Bob Gomez - enjoyed your songs at the 'Garden'. Look forward to seeing you again. Leah & Chris, I enjoyed meeting you and plan to come up to San Jose (on the way to Willits again, probably) sometime later this year (maybe summer?) so maybe we can get together and all try our hands (or voices) at a song (maybe). Rick & Mari D, thanks again for all your hospitality, I really enjoyed hanging with you a lot. I kind of forgot that some people have to work the next day but you were able to remedy my misconception. Rick, you asked me I wanted to try and record something and I sort of "hmmmm...maybe" 'd as a reply.. Shoulda said, 'Hell, yes".
