The Lyrics

Well, without 'Sex' to write about looks like it's time to work on "Vices & Bad Habits". Not to worry about material; always plenty to go around. This thoroughly exaggerates my experience with Horse Racing and wagering. Not to say I didn't end up obsessed with it to the point that on many days nothing else seemed to matter to me...hmmm...maybe it's NOT that big of an exaggeration, after all... Anyway, I decided about...oh, 14 or 15 years ago that I needed to quit, even though I had reached to point where it had become moderately profitable for me (very moderate). Just got way too immersed in it. Actually have gone twice since then...won about $100 the first time and about a year later lost back just about the same amount.
Forgive me my obsession
I am heading out to Del Mar
I'll catch the train, or bus, or boat
I'll even drive my own car
Love to bet the ponies
so you'll see me at the track
Hope that when the day is done
I've enough dough to get back

I am serious, makes me delirious
Track, I can't resist
My wife will be pissed
I don't care, Del Mar

I went there several years ago
I couldn't read the form
but I had some hunches
I won some bets, boy it was fun
it seemed so easy; wound up winning bunches
The next time that I went was sad
I lost a lot, I didn't cash a single bet
I blamed it on "bad luck", boo-hoo
and I told myself that now
my luck was overdue

Del Mar, went there to bet the ponies
Del Mar, took lots of cash with me
Del Mar, I remember that great feeling
when the first horse that I bet there
opened up and pulled away, yes, he paid "box cars"

Was easy to be consumed
Even though I had been warned
I had to bet each race
Found that all the time, wherever
had the racing form and notes
I was in real deep
Exacta combo's screamed at me
so long and loud that I could not resist them now
Gambling addiction filled my soul
was rough, no sh*t, for sure it did
Was no easy out

Del Mar, just betting a few ponies
Del Mar, seemed innocent to me
Del Mar, my adrenaline was speeding
seemed that all that I could think of
was the next post and the bets I'd make at Del Mar

(Instrumental Break)

Del Mar, just betting a few ponies
Del Mar, seemed innocent to me
Del Mar, my adrenaline was speeding
seemed that all that I could think of
was the next post and the bets I'd make at Del Mar
My adrenaline was speeding
my existence now was shrinking
all I cared about was next post time at Del Mar

JD - Thanks! Rick D - Probably true, I know you did "Parked Car" a few months back but I don't recall any other versions except the one I did that couldn't pass muster on the 'content' rules a few months ago. 'Dark Star' is a damn good song. Thanks!
