The Lyrics

You American chaps probably aren't going to understand this, but.. today (well, yesterday by the time this goes live) was the first Ashes test, in Cardiff. England had started badly, when Ian Bell's wicket went down they were 43 for 3 and things weren't looking good. Until England's most promising new batsman stepped up to the crease with a great knock of 134.. at the point when I finished this, he was still at about 130no, so I had to change the last verse.

News report

Joe Root, Joe Root, Joe Root, Joe Root
I'm begging of you, make another one
Joe Root, Joe Root, Joe Root, Joe Root.
Don't get out until you've made a ton

In Summer, cricket is the best
In Cardiff for the Ashes test
England win the toss and bat: astute?

No! What we didn't want to see
Twelfth over: 43 for 3
Then who walks out, up to the crease: Joe Root

His first shot was too close to call
The next one Haddin dropped the ball
Fron then, he'd got his eye in, had Joe Root

From then on, he started to score
Past 50 in fifty-six balls
With Ballance giving balance to Joe Root

Joe Root, Joe Root, Joe Root, Joe Root
I'm begging of you, make another one
Joe Root, Joe Root, Joe Root, Joe Root.
Don't get out until you've made a ton

One answer if you had to guess
Who could bat England out this mess
He's done it once again it seems, Joe Root

Oh no! You're out, but just the same
Your 134 did change the game
From 43 when you came in, Joe Root

Joe Root, Joe Root, Joe Root, Joe Root
I'm begging of you, make another one
Joe Root, Joe Root, Joe Root, Joe Root.
Don't get out until you've made a ton

Joe Root, Joe Root

This is about a lame Brit sport and is not funny. 111. Go "flyerer" a kite Phil.

My brother spent some time in the Caribbean and watched cricket matches. He tried to explain it to me once. Never quite grasped it. Sort of a form of baseball, perhaps evolving from a common ancestor, much like Neanderthal and Modern Man. Is it true that a match can be carried over from one day to the next?

For it's Root, Root, Root for the home team... At least he didn't "take one for the team" like Alastair Cook did.

Patrick - not just "a match can be carried over from one day to the next", but a test match is designed to: they'll run up to five days (and if there's no result by the end of five days, it's a draw); there are also limited overs forms designed to be played over a day, but the real game has so many more opportunities for changes in fortune: as I write, the Aussies are 271 for 7, in reply to England's 430 all out.. so we've probably got a little bit of an upper hand at the moment, but not enough to start shouting about.
