The Lyrics

This is not a 'political take sides' parody - so please, let's not go there. It simply reflects on events as they were generally recorded. Original song on YouTube

Cad, inferred: top office blight
Sev’ties, bitter pill
Taping: not permissable
Yep, you guessed: they're out for Mil’

For they’re raising matters of deceit
And smoking gun arised...
Justice due for Tricky Dick
With a slush fund – can’t deny

Yeah, they say he’s a criminal
Who is shunning points of law
Much maligned due to Watergate
Richard: “free of guilt” - implores

Saying “Hunt arranged the burg’ly”
“I ain’t never trusting Lid’ again”
“Do-nat-ion claims, they’ve done in my head”
Sweet – distance myself from them...

Now, no-one’s ever keen: impeachment scene
Why, if lie: out, you may be found
Sure, tapes’ll show disgrace of a cover-up
While the scandal drags you down

Well that clever Dean’s no friend you fear
And a turncoat Mitchell’s shown
You’re trumped - for all your confed’rates flee
Now the knave’s gonna fall alone

So – said “I am not a criminal”
Flew: took ‘copter from the lawn
Can’t deny, was a Pres estranged
POTUS wary of the law

“Gerald Ford, you got to help me”
“(I am gonna make you Pres-i-dent)”
“Just slake these stains – proclamation: pen”
“Least Skynyrd are still my friends”

So – re-verse, he did, on Nixonal
Who got pardoned by the Ford
Pockets lined? Deal that’s pre-arranged?
Politics came to the fore

Say now, Ford, you gone done helped him
Now ain’t never gonna win again
Mistake? Your pain: Pres, now Carter treads
Sweet! Peanuts will be your friend

Tricky work here for Tricky Dick!

Lovely, and unmistakably your work M and P. I can see the jump from scrolling thru EJ song titles to the idea for this Nixon revisit. It's a dark day indeed when you have to point our Skynyrd's still your friend - the punishment not quite fitting the crime - oh and I love this OS btw so thanks, it's my fave EJ driving song - 555

Thanks Stuart. A couple of points to your observation: (1) Merry is a genealogist (a serious/proper one) and has links somewhere along the line to ol' Tricky Dick. I suggested this as a parody with tongue firmly in cheek, and then ducked, expecting a firm NO. To my surprise I got a firm yes! (2) No scrolling was required, it is also one of my fave Reg Dwight tunes. (3) Merry detests it, LOL :)

Why are you mentioning Reg Dwight; this is a parody of an Elton John tune

I have nothing to add, so I'll resign from comment on this one.

Your ability to track a parody to the original song continues to be most impressive. Don't know if it was intended, but reading "Peanuts will be your friend" had my mind immediately jumping to Weird Al's "Mashed potatoes can be your friend".

Hi Rex, thanks very much. The Weird Al reference was unintentional, though always good to have a bit of Al splashed around! It was a reference to Jimmy Carter, and how he was big in the peanut business - and those of use who take a dim view of politicians of ALL persuasions may say that made him eminently qualified for the job.

Best non-political, political parody yet seen by yours truly. I remember the whole sordid affair. I was in the military when this all went down and it seems like 100 years ago. Was actually glad to see him go but the war dragged on.

I'm DKTOS on this but listened to the YouTube link and it all fell together. I remember the rancor within the ranks at the time. The slogan was as follows:

Why change Dicks in the middle of a screw.
Vote for Nixon in '72.

Just like the clapper: Nix-on, Nix-off. Loved it.
