The Lyrics

A fairly sick thought, I know, but I did wonder if transatlantic pronunciation differences did cause the Metropolitan Police to misunderstand the "War on Tourism", and kill an innocent Brazilian in the mistaken belief he was a suicide bomber. OK, so he wasn't a tourist, but I still get the feeling that if the police start killing people by mistake, then they're kind of doing the terrorist's job for them...
I shot the tourist, but I did not shoot the terrorist
I shot the tourist, but I did not shoot the terrorist

On the Tube in London town
There's a man who we gunned down
We thought the public ought to be happy
For the killing of a terrorist
Well, we thought he was a terrorist
But I say:

I shot the tourist, and we made quite sure that he was dead
I shot the tourist, it was only seven bullets in the head

Watching PC, he was taking a pee
Why then, I do not know
And identified, mistakenly
He said, kill him before he goes
He said, kill him before he blows
I say:

I shot the tourist, but it was in the public's defense.
I shot the tourist, but it was a failure of intelligence

A man he came my way one day
He went on the underground
And there were lots of other people around
So we had to take him down
So we shot, we shot him down.
I say:

I shot the tourist, 'cause I thought he was a terrorist
I shot the tourist, 'cause I thought he was a terrorist

Reflexes got the better of me
And the whole of the Met Police
We've got a version of the story to sell,
But one day the truth, it may come out,
Yes, one day the truth, it may come out.
But I say:

I shot the tourist, but I did not shoot the terrorist, oh no
I shot the tourist, but I did not shoot the terrorist, oh no

Maybe the shooter should get Rudy Giuliani to defend him at his trial. Those of you who watched New York news in 1999, you know what I'm talking about. Rudy wasn't always "America's Mayor."

It is a good parody, but my mouse is avoiding the "funny" dot, because maybe this wasn't written for voting... but for reflecting. Good parody.

Whoa. Heavy stuff, but well written, Philbo.

This story made me sick when it came out. 7 bullets to the head is not a mistake, it's a fear-motivated execution.

I'm still not entirely sure what to make of this: bits are leaking from the inquiry, and none of it's looking particularly good for the police at the moment. Latest report seems like the surveillance officers didn't reckon the guy *was* a terrorist, but this obviously wasn't the message that the firearms officers got... however, ISTM that this could be a particularly cynical ruse trying to set up they guys who pulled the trigger as scapegoats :-(
