The last time I sang one of my pieces at the Espresso Gardens Cafe up in San Jose I did "Andy Was A Fine Cop; Mayberry RIP", which I wrote to the OS "Brandy" by Looking Glass. While I was rehearsing it with Mari Duncan we were fooling around with endings and one of us came up with an end line of "Fife Shot The Sheriff" to close the "live" number with for dramatic emphasis. We were joking around a bit and Mari suggested I should write a continuation of that parody using "I Shot the Sheriff", which I thought was a terrific idea, but - since I didn't have a copy of the OS at home it kind of evaporated from my mind for about, oh, I guess 8 or 9 months or so...Well, when I was house-sitting recently for a good friend I was looking through his CD's for parody material and came across one of the "hits of the 70's" CD's...so I copied that, and a few like it and just listened to all the OS songs for ideas. Turns out I got a lot of parody material from those "Hit collections". Well...I got reminded of that "Fife Shot..." idea....so here it is....

Fife shot the sheriff; now he is no longer Deputy
Fife shot he Sheriff; He's now in the penitentiary

Everyone in Mayberry town
Did treat him like a clown
Every day they made more jokes it seemed
"Fife is just a silly Deputy
Fife's not much of a Deputy"
Well, OK...

Fife shot the Sheriff; little screwball was just too intense
Fife shot the Sheriff; Got pissed off at all those dismissive comments

Sheriff Andy tried to humor him
He thought Barney was dumb
And every time that he spoke to Aunt Bea
She said, "Barney; your mouth - please close"
Of her crap, he had overdosed
Was plain...

Fife shot the Sheriff; Plugged him straight on, no doubt of intent
Fife shot the Sheriff; every bullet in revolver spent

Freaked-out; he went haywire that day
Yeah, he mowed down half the town
Happened so sudden; there was blood all around
He wasted half of the town
Yeah, Fife shot fifty people down
They lay...

Fife shot the sheriff; Andy killed by squirrelly Deputy
Why Fife shot sheriff; seems there was some animosity

Resentment grew; but no one did see
Poor Barney; he sure did get peeved
So Barney said, "Dang it, they can go to Hell"

So I guess, in this "alternate history," Mr. Furley is played instead by Jim Nabors?

Lionel - Well, I'm going on to the next one, but ex-Deputy Fife, well...it looks like he's stuck in a bad place, so to speak, doesn't it? Michael - let's see...in this "alternative universe" Barney has blown away Sheriff Andy and about half the town. Waayyall, let me think hear, what's that gonna do to the futcha'? 'Cause poor Goober (Jim Nabors character in the town) might jest have been one of the unlucky citizens to get blasted by Berserk Barney...Um...I'm not sure but I THINK that makes George W. Bush "Mr. Furley" in the futcha' "Three's Company" universe...and THAT infinitely more suitable position for Mr. Bush spares us from his entry into Politics and hence changes the 2000 Presidential Election Results, since clearly George would have made a splendid Furley and stayed in the acting business. So that would make the 2000 Presidential Election Al Gore vs hmmm...maybe...hmmm...let me think...who else ran in the Republican Primaries that year? Wayall, I'll havta' git back to ya' ~ ~ ~ If ya' think this is fascinating you should hear my idea for a "more realistic" version of "The Flintstones" cartoon series...hmmm....Nah, maybe you shouldn't...lol...thanks...
