Original Song Title:

"Me And My Arrow"

 (MP3)
Original Performer:

Harry Nilsson

Parody Song Title:

"Me And My Marrows"

Parody Written by:

Merry & Pippin

The Lyrics

Me and my marrows
Planted with harrow *
Money is so low, seed price not so:
My crop choice is narrow

Me and my marrows
Shaking a dry gourd
Rattle those seeds so, music’ly sown
It’s me and my marrows

And in this farming trend I take up
They sprawly spawn; they grow low
But if we stake up they might snake up
Then very long, from crest they spill

Me and my marrows
(Dewey shoots anew we accrue)
Feted, not sallow
Scare-off-the-birds-crow, squashes then grow
It’s me and my marrows

Me and my marrows
Hoe out the tares so
Shoo ‘way the sparrows
(Clime’ wrong for taros;
So I grow marrows)

Me and my marrows
(gooey fruit to chew we do grew)
Laden in barrows
To market we go, lovingly grown
It’s me and my marrows

*Yeah, we know they grow above the ground, but at some stage something must get plowed to plant them in the first place

After the depraved delights of your last effort, I was looking forward to what you would do with marrows. Nothing but horticultural wholesomeness. I see Donald Duck's nephew got a little action in though. I've raised more than a few veggies and there's nothing like the fruits of your labor as opposed to loins for a change.

Had to look up OS. Not one of Harry's best, sounds more like Gilbert O'Sullivan meets Leapy Lee. Kudos for many creative rhyme matches for marrow.

You squashed the heck out 'a this, into a nice parody fit..unique idea...like LL said, not familar with the song, I kept thinking, "Me and My Shadow"

Indeed, very original and enjoyable. especially liked '(Dewey shoots anew we accrue)' and 'Shoo ‘way the sparrows'.

Thanks LL, AFW and Glen.

Glen: the song was so short that I felt that the do do dos had to be represented, so glad you liked Dewey.

AFW: I take it you checked the link for the song, not that I would recommend the dirge - it's pretty awful. Hope we improved on it.

LL: If you enjoy horticulture, you may want to try this one:

I was expecting something about bone structure or anatomy, sort of like

And felt better after a dictionary confirmed that "marrow", alone, is a BR term for what in the US would usually be called "marrow squash". Footnotes! We need footnotes! ;-D

:) But... At the risk of starting a sentence with but... Would I get footnotes if you put 'squash' into a parody to explain that it was a marrow? :) Just askin' ;)

Cool parody, and a pedantic songfact: most people remember this song from 1970s Plymouth car commercials. Once upon a time, I owned a Plymouth Arrow, which this song promoted, it was no good. (showing my age here maybe?) Love the subject, nobody ever writes about squash. 5s.

Thanks anondria! Nobody ever writes about Lemon Squash either. Frankly, squash has been discriminated against ever since, ummm, for a long time now. Sorry your Plymouth Arrow was no good. Plymouth Argyle has always been a bit of a lemon as well, but it may take a Britishy-type person to follow that comment.

You didn't start the sentence with "But", you started it with :) -- and AFAIK, no US or BR style guide has a rule against that. ;)

There are many varieties of squash, including the sport ;-D, so as a generic term (assuming from context we know it's the gourd- i'an Knot the sport), no f/n needed for either side of Pond or Equator. It's the other way around -- from the specific to the General (Alexander) that left us Yanks yankin' it in wonder. ;)

btw, re: discrimination, there have been many jokes about women/men and zucchini squash, including some accidentally ill-composed pics featured on Jay Leno's show. And (at the risk of starting a sentence with "and", which is incorrect.) In addition, zucchini seem to be found in the oddest places -- or spaces. ;-D

anondria - thanks so much for stopping by. We do like to do parodies about odd subjects if possible; we once did an entire parody about a planarian and another about a maraschino cherry! :)

TT: I'm kind of against footnotes (in our parodies, not yours) as I figure we do an intro if needed and then folks who are truly interested can research the rest. I like to force people to think... ;)

I've found that you can't get a lot of people to think, and you surely can't force them over the 'Net.. ;) You can lead a horse to water, but .... and then a lot of good refs get missed. TBPH, not everyone has the time (or inclination) to research obscure refs -- I wonder how many knew Bartholin's at first "glance" (heh! heh! heh!) -- hence, s/he who makes it complex or arcane also tries to help.

Glad you added the qualifier on f/n opinion! TBPH, if it were a lesser-regarded author, I'd probably have skipped it for lack of grok (plus the usual DKTOS, of course). Perhaps others did. I rather enjoy being sent to a dictionary or WikiP or whatever if it's an author I respect. Cheers!
