This is for all the parody authors, vets and newbies alike, who feel their spoofing talent is underestimated by fellow authors. I'm sure nearly all of us have been there -- so sing along!
Well, I'd started out on a site called amiright,
The parodies just blew my mind.
Now I'm up to 35th position,
But my niche I still just cannot find.
They don't seem to care that I'm hilarious
When I write of animals and booze,
"Coz I got them readily distressin', haven't learned my lesson,
They-didn't-like-my-song-spoof blues.
Well, I skewer some tunes from a dusty old cabina in a swivel chair,
Puttin' trashy lyrics to the fine old melodies,
Sayin', "Weird Al's gonna learn a lesson here!"
Instead, I'm stuck in 6th or 7th place,
This contest has to be a ruse!
"Coz I got them readily distressin', haven't learned my lesson,
They-didn't-like-my-song-spoof blues.
You know a man of my ability,
He should be hangin' out with spaff.com.
But till I get more fans, I guess I'll just have to wait,
And spend more soles* butchering these songs.
Well, all I can do is to shake my head,
Can't believe I'm always gettin' snubbed,
For what I write at this cabina in Peru
Are songs that rival Cletus Judd!
But baby, don't expect to see "em
Labeled SOTM, though it sometimes goes to someone new,

I'll have to take it home, Michael, so I can go through it with the OS being played...I don't remember exactly how the OS goes and I'm a bit short on time this morning, but what I read of it seems very well done. Looks like you put a lot into it, so I expect it's gonna be right on.

Is Cledus T. Judd even around anymore, his stuff was good, he did some of the best country parodies out there... And once he learned to actually sing he was really good
SOTM - Take it from someone who once sketched somewhat on "drab rhyming blues" to AC/DC's "down payment blues" - I know the feeling. :-)

(SOTM) I was able to find a copy of TOS and sing along, which was effortless due to your great pacing and rhyming. Picking the top 5 for SOTM is never easy; in nearly every round this year even 7 picks would have meant leaving behind parodies I really enjoyed. While I don't know yet if this'll make my top 5, I do know that I enjoyed it.

Thanks for all the comments and votes. To spaff.com: We don't really eat Lima beans here. The most popular national food is ceviche, but the ones I like include papa huancayina, chicharrones, the chicharron and camote (sweet potato) sandwich, pollo enrollado and some of the hot soups they serve in the Andes. Plus the "jalea de marisco" they serve in the far north is quite good. Otoh, I absolutely love the national drink which is pisco sour. ---MM

To Stuart: Yes, I really live in Peru. I moved here from San Antonio a little over a year ago. Summer is finally starting here (I'm on the coast), so we're in for about 5 months of nice weather.----MM

I remember scoring a 1st place over two years ago in the third SOTM contest, when it was still ridiculously new and nobody knew what was going on. I think I beat Spaff by 2 points or something. And now, I anguish over the fact that I'll probably never be able to do it again.
What I mean by this rant is, the spotlight is over-rated. But good luck getting there anyway. Despite my DKTOS, I enjoyed this parody, especially "readily distressin', haven't learned my lesson".

SOTM - some parts of this seemed forced (when sung) and had to be pronounced creatively to fit with the OS, but when read it makes perfect sense. Not bad.
I agree with what 2nz said. As long as you're doing it for the love of writing, you'll have an audience and do well.
