The Lyrics

I suggest that, among the most difficult tasks for an amiwriter, authoring a respectful accurate parody about a place that you've never been may be the hardest job of all. For starters, all a writer has is his (in my case considerable) book knowledge of geography, history, topography, and culture. If the author does not speak the language of the land, then there is the ever-present risk of mispronouncing and therefore not rhyming proper names. I would say, however, that the real question is WHY should I attempt this undertaking. It's because I find the title switch irrestible. Equally important, I'd like this to be a tribute to Susanna Viljanen...one of my favorite parody authors who just happens to be from (Surprise!) Finland.

Took the boat up to Helsinki,
The snow was falling from above.
Froze my ears and my left 'pinkie" -
I forgot my hat and glove.
The town is on the Gulf of Finland,
A city that's both proud and fair.
And when my trip took me inland
I beheld such wonders there.

All the people are so friendly.
There's a smile on ev-er-y face.
There are Finns to my left, Finns to my right.
I know I'm gonna love this place!
Fin-land! So grand!
There are Finns to my left, Finns to my right.
And this looks like my kind of space.

I roamed on the Lapland tundra,
Saw big trees and lakes. Oh my!
I guess I'm getting old - 'cause I felt so darn cold.
Next time, I'll come in July.
It's the land of Paavo Nurmi
And some names that I can't rhyme.
No one can cuss Jean Sibelius
Or the brave Carl von Mannerheim.

How they welcomed this Yankee tourist!
I saw not one person who frowned.
There were Finns on my left, Finns on my right.
I think I'd like to stick around.

It's a lovely country.
I love to see the Midnight Sun.
'Though I never mastered skiing,
There's still much to do that's fun.
I tried to visit Lake Ladoga,
Just to stand upon its shore.
It's a sight I missed - Russians would get pissed.
They stole it in the Winter War.

What a nation! What a people!
I salute them here with my pen.
There are Finns on my left, Finns on my right -
Just one Susanna Viljanen.
There are Finns in the day, Finns in the night -
Just one Susanna Viljanen.

And there's one final benefit. For the first time in my life, it would be easy to find a Lutheran Church! ;D

Very nice tribute to Susanna and Finland...clever use of the other song...must admit I did not know it...only knew "margaritaville"...

Very good-555! I've written on Finland before, but only using military topics :)

Might be scarier if you wrote "Djinns" ;-)

A worthy tribute. Hope Susanna checks in to see it soon. More kudos to her because she actually holds her own in her second language. Imagine trying to write this in Finnish! Nice to see Sibelius in there. too.

JRR Tolkien, a professor of linguistics and world authority on Anglo-Saxon language and culture, was fascinated by the epic poems of the Lapps, handed down by a sung oral tradition, and their rune alphabet, basing his own invented Elvish languages partly on them.

Monty Python have a tourist spoof called 'Finland' on their 'Contractual Obligation' album, but it's not exactly what you'd call a tribute.

Nicely done indeed - makes me want to visit Finland. And I'm sure Susanna will be justifiably flattered by this gentlemanly tribute. A worthy 555
