Parody Song Title:

"Imagine"

Parody Written by:

The Lyrics

Not that I'm totally against the "brand" culture, but you've got to admit that it's gone a bit far..
Imagine there's no brand names
It's easy if you try,
No "Gucci" or "Armani"
And no jeans from "Levi"
Imagine all the people
Living life in grey

Imagine there's no adverts
Examining your psyche
All you'd wear is "trainers"
Not "Reebok" or "Nike"
Imagine all the people
With unbranded shoes

Brands tattoo'd on your femur
And you're not the only one,
Wonder how they earned such loyalty
And can it all be undone?

Imagine no "Macdonalds"
We'd get some real food
No more "Coke" or "Pepsi"
Or "Dr Pepper", too
Imagine all the people
With just what they need

You may drive in a Beamer,
Or figure your Ferrari's fun
I hope some day we'll wake up
And their world will be undone

555. But if there where no brand name artists, how would we parodists find common ground? "Based on the performance by some anonymous guy who occasionally picks up a nameless homemade guitar down at the local noname pub and improvise a lot with it while his comrades try to pace a made-up right there drinking song to his more or less talanted fingering" just donīt give the same kind of I-can-relate-to-this feeling, does it? ;-)

555,and I even like how this parodys subject keeps the "Google"ads from focusing on any one particular subject!

Hey Phil...if I could afford it, I'd totally be a brand-aholic...but alas...I have yet to make it big...or to trick a rich guy into marrying me. Oh well...excellent work on this one! 5s! ("Brands tattoo'd on your femur" = my favorite line!!!)

Great parody, Philbo ... check out the movie "Repo Man" for a hilarious and somewhat cynical glimpse at what American "culture" would be like without any brand-name products at all ... with everything "generic".

Great concept ... reminds me of some ot those sterile futuristic movies like thx 1168... Ironically, you chose to allow such egregious product placement for 'New Coke' in verse three?

About the movie "Repo Man":

"The writer and director of this classic is Alex Cox. While he never really had another film as successful as Repo Man he does have talent. For someone born in England he has an excellent grasp on what makes America unique. The takes this film into a difficult genre, the Sci-Fi/Black Comedy. The special effects are cheesy, almost laughable by modern standards but here they not only work, they make the film. The effects are so bad you are forced to concentrate on the characters. Cox could not get permission to use product names so every item is the film is the generic white label with black letters. Rather than find this a limitation Cox laughs at it with a can labeled simply FOOD or DRINK and a bottle of drugs marked AMYL NITRATE. "

That quote comes from the following website:

Thanks, all... JD - I saw Repo Man must have been fifteen, twenty years ago. Must admit that I don't remember the bottle of amyl nitrate, but the FOOD and DRINK labels rang a bell. Must try and find a copy on video sometime.

Very good, though I think of brand names as an inevitable sign of a successful economy. Also, I loved "Repo Man" (and "Straight To Hell", even though it co-starred loudmouth Courtney Love. Jeez, she must be OLD.)

I guess brand names must be a part of regular consumer society, but I don't know 'cus I get everything free....in fact, I get PAID to take good stuff away.... :-)
Phil Alexander - July 06, 2004 - Report this comment
OK, Merry, I'll bite: what do you do for a living then? Dustman springs to mind... (or Repo Man, even ;-) )

I agree with Claude about brand names, but this is a very good parody. But I got a little confused when the last verse went from second person to third person to first person.
Rod Worden - July 06, 2004 - Report this comment
I imagine things might be a little dreary if brand names were somehow done away with. Good work, though, Phil, three generic fives!

A brief post script... (with a quick aside for thanks for the kind remarks) - I wouldn't want to go to a Repo Man world where there are no brand names at all, where you eat "FOOD", drink "DRINK" and sniff "AMYL NITRATE"... but I do think that brand "culture" is too pervasive into our lives, aided by incredibly huge advertising budgets to try and make us think that, for example, you can't do sport without wearing Nike; not taking your children to McDonalds makes you a bad parent; spraying expensive, branded, foul-smelling shite over your body is an essential prerequisite for any kind of interaction with the opposite sex... and so on

This made me think of the Parallel Or 90 Degrees song 'Unbranded', which has a similar sentiment.

Love your parody! Thank you. I write parodies too but so far just for fun. Do you just write lyrics or someone sing your parodies like Weird Al's parodies.
Phil Alexander - January 03, 2013 - Report this comment
Hi Mira - back when I wrote this, I pretty much just wrote lyrics; now I spend more time performing them than writing (especially practising). Thanks :-)

..if you write parodies "just for fun", why not submit them here? That's pretty much what we all do.
