"Aussie Xmas (Warmth I’m Over)"

Parody Written by:

Merry & Pippin

The Lyrics

Peregrin: I write this in a pool of sweat, as befits this merry time of year in my neck of the woods (bush)...For those of you beset by snow at this time of year, you have no idea how much I envy you...
Snows, not at Christmas
In land under, down
Hand people, just over:
SPF 1-0-1

A sweltering Christmas
Sky’s chock full of sun
You see, North Amer’cans
Would simply stand stunned

A very melting Christmas
And a burning New Year
There’s no point in whinging
That’s how it is here

It’s so damn hot, Christmas
Warmth I’m over [repeat during verse]
Spawns freakish storms, strong
I don’t want it [repeat during verse]
The weather ‘what fors’ us
We just tag a-long
Also, Aussie Christmas
For those that aren’t bright
Suntan - in the long run
Lends cancer for life

A very sweaty Christmas
In the South Hemisphere
Let's share perspiration
Humidity’s here

And so, Aussie Christmas
Warmth I’m over [repeat during verse]
Has burgers on buns
I don’t want it [repeat during verse]
And crowds, at beach, show up
Drinking brew and having fun
You know, Father Christmas
Down chimney ain’t done
Surfs in on a point break
With toys for the young

From Merry and from Pippin
Have a happy New Year
We hope you have good ones
We shout to our peers

Warmth I’m over, I don’t want it
Warmth I’m over now
Santa "surfs in on a point break"? This is a philatelic reference to what is generally regarded as Australia's WORST Christmas stamp ever, the 1977 issue...

Cold enough here recently, tho' waring now, and so far only sub-shovelworthy snowfalls, which is ample for me anywhere off teh ski slopes. (Love the tune, BTW ... wonder why I didn't think of this song, too, when I was spoofing "Stewball" a while back?)
Great job, as usual, and a Merry Xmas to you both .. I hope your holiday season is a Pip(pin).

I'll stick with a Florida Christmas. Not 90 deg F with 90% humidity in December, but not 20 deg F either. I nice comfortable high of 65.

Of course, this year I'll be in Switzerland for Christmas. That'll be a shock. I checked the weather forecast for Luzern, Switzerland. Lo temp 1 deg C, Hi temp 2 deg C.

I'm in a CA drought.

It's been raining for days here, chilly and windy, so no sympathy from me! Fives, but no sympathy.
mandamoo - December 11, 2008 - Report this comment
As a fellow Aussie Xmas swelterer, I can relate Peregrin - you have *my* sympathies! Perfectly written as always. Merry Xmas to you both :)

aint that the truth, Pip, and February aint even started yet - at least I'm better off down here in Melbourne - 555 (Hobart's a nice place this time of year)

"Have a happy New Year" to you and yours as well.
A well written parody, deserving of 5s.I'm with MP though...no sympathy from me.
All day long we've had snow/sleet/ice falling from the sky...the roads are slick...I've had to scrape my windshield twice...and tomorrow is supposed to bw worse

Merry and Pippin, you might want to think twice about envying a white Christmas if you knew my situation. It has been raining constantly for days, the temperature is close to freezing and is in the teens (Fahrenheit) at night, there is a threat of the worst snow/ice storm since 1967 (23 years before I was born) in my area come this weekend, but at least I have a decent heating system where I live and I drive a car with a rear engine and rear-wheel-drive, a crammed front cargo area and a gasoline-powered heater, thus making it a better winter vehicle than most others. (It's a 1967 VW Type 3 Squareback/Variant 3-door wagon.) 5s.

Hi all, thanks for your comments. I knew this would strike a chord with mandamoo and Stu, if they saw it. Maybe Kristof also, as an ex-pat, if he sees it.

A couple of points of clarification: For those who don't know (and there seem to be some around) Merry used to live in CA but moved back to her native Ohio a year ago. She knows what a white Christmas is!

IB, and Andria particularly, my comments are not meant to infer that your weather extremes are insignificant. In Aus, it's more a cultural thing of longing because all the Christmas movies we tend to see portray white Christmases blah blah etc!

Andria, I take your point about the possibility of the storm. I hope it doesn't happen for you. 3 weeks ago here, we had what has since been described as the worst thunderstorm in 40 years in Brisbane. It was all over in an hour and many parts of the city were declared a disaster area. There was a lot of damage in my suburb. When it happened it wasn't even officially summer...so we have another 3 months of this to look forward to! The rain is great, God knows we need it, the whole country and my area in particular has been in drought for over a decade. It's all relative, I guess. Again, a Merry Christmas to all :)

M & P, love to hear about anyhing ~AwesomeAussie~ , even the reverse weather! InNorCAL today it is chilly, but the leaves of the Ambers & Aspens are so colorful; the Pumpkins remain in the fields, waiting for the rains, when the ranchers will till them under.

Merry, did you reside in SoCAL or NorCAL ? MonSieur PereGrin, in the movie ~AUSTRIALIA~ it did indicate that drought was the norm, however they were so relieved when the thunderstorm came . . . especially theDrover Jackman & Ms Kidman, as they celebrated heartily, Sir!

Nice read, incl. comments. Funny exchange twds the end. I remember news of that Brisbane storm you mentioned. At least there's the right kind of warmth in the parody. I've lost count of the number of times my J students have quizzed me about the Santa-surfboard thing. I force a grin but the humor wears thin after a while. I don't love a sunburnt country at Christmas. Sec code was 'WEW' (!) I knocked five degrees of the max for three days for your pleasant relief.
