Wriggling ribbon from its lair
Makes its way along the hall,
Slithering on slippery skin;
Got no legs, so it can’t crawl.

On it sidles, on it slides—
Does is slither on outside?
I think I’ve lost it this time.

It is very, very long,
Stretched out, higher than a man
Playing center on the hardwood—
Seven feet from end to end.

Serpent plays and then it’s gone;
