Song Parodies -> "Shatner and the Pain"

Original Song Title:

"Laughter in the Rain"

Original Performer:

Neil Sedaka

Parody Song Title:

"Shatner and the Pain"

Parody Written by:

Porfle Popnecker

The Lyrics

Driving along with my radio playing
Something comes on that begins the fear
A sound like an elephant choked with a chain
I feel it roiling within my ears
The dying screams of a broiling steer

Oo, I hear Shatner and the pain
Streaking through my brain is unbearable
Oo, how he acts the lyrics out could without a doubt
Drive me insane

In his own style he enacts "Rocket Man"
Reach for the dial with a trembling hand
By "Mr. Tamborine Man" paralyzed
Musical spikes driven through my eyes
He's shooting Lucy out of the sky

Oo, I hear Shatner and the pain
Like a bullet train roaring through my skull
Oo, histrionically inept, think he should've kept
Phasers on full

I think a marmalade tree just died

Oo, I hear Shatner and the pain
Makes my mind abstain from reality
Oo, and the drama that he brings to the way he sings
Unhinges me

Oo, I hear Shatner and the pain
Causes total drain of my sanity
Oo, how the horror of his voice leaves me little choice
Freak out or flee

Oo, I hear Shatner and the pain
Filling each refrain with unending dread
Oo, how he wields each deadly verse like a voodoo curse
Striking me dead

Oo, I hear Shatner and the pain
Causing me in vain to run off the road
Oo, how the sonic siege extends as my car upends
And then explodes

So, Neil Sedaka is a ripe target for parody and satire? Who knew? You get a 555 for sheer audacity, Porfle BTW, you've been very generous to me so far, so let me respond by saying, "Merry Christmas"

Merry Christmas to you, too, and thanks!

So, (as Kirk would say), "I-have-had-about-enough-of-you!" 555!!!

Great work, and I hated the "Golden Throats" CDs as much as I love your work. The OS is so tacky and cliched 1970s AM rock that it's awesome, too. 5s.

Much appreciated!

(AofA) Peronally I liked Shatner's performance of "Rocket Man". I thought he was funny (musically it sucked), but it was so ridiculous, I couldn't help but laugh. However, I can see how others could be very annoyed by what Shatner did. So I liked this parody, it had some shining moments. Big ups for the use of "histrionically", wow!

Thanks, yeah I always liked that word.

I agree with Blaydeman on the whole "Rocket Man" thing. I see why people of the original song might hate it (but isn't that what doing a parody is all about?) I'm sure Snoop Dogg hates Ben Folds Five's "B*tch's Ain't Sh*t" too. That doesn't mean it's not well done or hilarious. Anyways, Good parody but I wish you could have made this more of a whole Anti-Shanter tribute all together instead of just focusing on his terrible singing career.

I like to focus on one aspect of the Shat at a time!

Thanks! Nice Shatner impression.

(Ages) Yeah, that's right..Shatner can't sing at all! I see YT vids of him butchering every classic rock tune 60's and 70s alike, plus him singing covers of WWE themes as well. Talk about his voice echoing like the mountains' echo. He should go back to Star Trek..LOL! Great Shatner bashing, even though I like William Shatner.

Yeah me too, but even us devoted Trekkers can't resist poking fun at the Shat's vocal stylings. Thanks for the comment!

(Ages) Huh, I was expecting more riffing on Shatner's overuse of pauses and possible ego issues instead of his singing career that I'm only aware of due to his Futurama appearance. That said, you did good here, the only thing I can find wrong is nothing on your part, I'm just not to familiar with Shatner's singing career, though according to your parody that's a good thing. 555

If you ever want to catch any of his classic song stylings on youtube, I'd suggest "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds", "Rocket Man", and "Hey, Mr. Tambourine Man." You've never heard them done quite that way before.

Funny song, like Britney Spears, I listen to Shatner and can't look away (he's actually pretty brilliant with it).

Ages....LOL. This was fun...I've actually never seen/heard him sing. I've heard people talk about it enough that I never want to...hahaha. Nice work!
