Original Performer:

Parody Song Title:

"Fifty Themes You Can Uncover"

Parody Written by:

Adagio

The Lyrics

"The answer is deep inside your head", they said to me
The songs are easy if you take them logically
I'd like to help you in your struggle to write free
There must be fifty themes you can uncover.

They said it's really not my place to intercede
I hope my weaning at all costs is never misunderstood
There is no deceit and I must never be rude
There must be fifty themes you can uncover
Fifty themes you can uncover.

Just write about fat, Jack
Bring out that can, man
Write about that new toy, Joy
Just write yourself free
Have you got pus, Russ?
Got a song right there, as such
Just sing about pee, Bea
I think that's the key.

Ooo look at the snacks, Mack
Slip past the ban, Stan
There's no need to annoy, Roy
Just listen to me
No need to cuss, Gus
Some peeps have that golden touch
I write about pee, Bea
Just write yourself free.

They said it grieves me so to see you in this vein
I wish there was something we can do to make you write again
I said I treasure your opinion and would you please explain
About the fifty ways.

They said you should just sleep upon your song tonight
I think in the morning you will begin to see it right
I had so missed the rhyme and realized they probably were right
There must be fifty themes you can uncover
Fifty themes you can uncover.

Just write about fat, Jack
Bring out that can, man
Write about that new toy, Joy
Just write yourself free
Have you got pus, Russ?
Got a song right there, as such
Just sing about pee, Bea
I think that's the key.

Look at the snacks, Mack
Slip past the ban, Stan
No need to annoy, Roy
Just listen to me
No need to cuss, Gus
Some peeps have that golden touch
I write about pee, Bea
Just write yourself free.

As a musician, I always say "there is only twelve notes". It's what you do with them that matters. I had a (ex)friend who sincerly believed that he was so brilliant, we could make a bundle by him giving me his ideas for short stories. I would write them, and we would split the credit and money. What a deal! This prompted me to write a song "Ideas Are Cheap". The reason I don't parody this song is for just what I see here and in Simon's original. If there is fifty ways, where are they? I counted five in yours, maybe eight in Paul's. Once at work, we put a big piece of paper against the wall in the pot, wrote "Fifty Ways" at the top, and within a few weeks there were a couple hundred ways to leave your lover on there, many of which would not make it past Chuckie. If I ever do this song, I'm going to add verses until I really have fifty.

But Rick, my original lyrics say `There must be 50 ways to leave your lover`. I never said there were 50 so I didn`t sing about them all. But I really enjoy the parodies of my stuff that are done out here, or at least most of them.
Adagio - February 05, 2004 - Report this comment
Rick, I understand that you really want 50 ways, but the song suggested some samples...that's what I gave.

Adagio, I know. You're completely correct. I'm not grumbling about your song, I'm just using is as a springboard for discussion. I like your funny stuff. But I always look for the false advertising in music. When Starship sings: "We built this city on Rock and Roll", I always want to know what city, and in what way did rock and roll help to finance it's construction? I think we're all here because we like to analyze lyrics. And Paul, If my eyes are lonely, I'm certainly not going to be turning them to Joe DiMaggio.

Rick..:D ok As long a you don't think this is junk. I think that a lot of times in music, leeway is taken just to make a point. Like in the original, Paul says " there be fifty ways to leave your lover." To me, he(she in the song) was just giving a few examples to get the person to thinking. There seemed to be a little wink, wink, nudge, nudge on her part, too...an unspoken reason to just leave. Pare down your list to the acceptable ways to CG and I would love to read it.

Way more than fifty, Adagio and Rick - way way WAY more than fifty !
Adagio - February 05, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks Johnny, but are they ACCEPTABLE ways to the board? :D

Hey nice job; also, that one "Sounds of Silence" song? NOT EXACTLY SILENT
Adagio - February 05, 2004 - Report this comment
Right, Claude, and thanks.

Just want you to know that the stack of parodies Mari and I picked out for a second tribute had two of yours in it, since we missed you the first time, but since we can't really go over 9 or 10 I had to regretfully drop one. I'll tell you what they were when we release the next recording, but it may be a while, since we want to put more effort into #2.

I liked it, Adagio. Good fodder to parody!

(ABC) Unusual. The song seemed to be all about the discussion that followed it. Hm. 534.

(ABC) I liked the pus line best! :-)

(ABC) Unusual. The song seemed to be all about the discussion that followed it. Hm. Hilariously unusual and cleverly tricky. 555. But of course my evaluation is simply another one of the 50 themes.

Nice meta-parody, Patagio. Fave lines: "Just sing about pee, Bea / I think that's the key." And one of these days, I'm gonna write a version of "One in a Million" that actually names the other 999,999. Heh heh.
John Jenkins - June 04, 2004 - Report this comment
Good parody, Adagio. I think we all want to be like Stan.
Adagio - June 04, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks Agrimorfee , Mer, Mr. Copycat JD, Spaff (love to see the version of "One in a Million" that you would do) ), and JJ! :D

Or politic, Rick

Well, next time I have writers block, I'll know where to come :-)

well done Adagio .. this one gets my vote in the F's contest....
neminem - June 06, 2004 - Report this comment
Is it just me, or is there supposed to be a "wink wink nudge nudge" effect going on between the lines "Some peeps have that golden touch / I write about pee, Bea"? ;-)
Anyway, fived.
Jeff Reuben - June 06, 2004 - Report this comment
Of course, I had to love the line "Just sing about pee, Bea". Excellent job.
Adagio - June 06, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks a bunch, martha! Thanks Jeff, and neminem, you just taught me about a line that I unwittingly put in there and glad I'm glad that I did...thanks! (one of mine, 'It's Poop For Us', I used that subject deliberately)
