The Lyrics

With the recent book “Water” and film “Watermark”, Edward Burtynsky (“Manufactured Landscapes”) has used aerial photography to further document degradation of our planet’s water-resource. As Burtynsky brings a Canadian sensitivity to the issue, I have used a few French words in these lyrics. “eaux”, water (pl) and “haut”, high, are pronounced as ‘oh’. “autrui”, others, and “ouïe”, ouch! (pron. as ‘we’) rhyme with ‘see’.
To view our Earth is disconcerting;
Dammed place may land up dry as bones,
With overuse and exponential
Expansion of industrial zones.

But eyes high I spy------
Icefloes’ demise from polar seas;
And eaux------ oh those emotive
Haut-photos of Burty-ynsky’s!

Ice-caps dislodging, likely toasted;
Will flood the coastlines, raise the seas;
Less rain on heights, our food-stores threatened –
Our stewardship’s a travesty.

Water-woes ------- we owe to no one
Only ourselves, not autrui;
Ouïe! --- unwilling eyes we open
Edward’s lament-landscapes we see.

Parched Colorado River delta
Flow diverted – raise some herds –
Fish and amphibians find no shelter;
Plundered profits, pain deferred.

Manufactured western suburbs,
Life floats on dwindling aquifers;
Next door the ancient ghostly remnants
Of cultures faltered, disappeared.

And drought------ no doubt about it
We’re drifting to that turn of things.
What clout to save our offspring ?
- Cherish each drop that wetting wrings.

Our leaders opt for obfuscation;
A short-term outlook is obscene –
A final geologic era;
Warm welcome to Anthropocene !

And whoa! -------- those emotive
Views captured by Burtynsky !
Decry -------- and why not try
Avoid our man-made destiny ?

The news from Earth is disconcerting………….

More global warming garbage as the pre-industrial world has gone through many hot cycles w/o man's help. Please hug a tree to make yourself feel better and remember to wear your hippy CND symbol proudly ;-)

I listened to the OS and found that your parody was faithful to its structure. But, as previously discussed, your submission lacks the elements of parody: humor, sarcasm, irony, etc. Yet, if I were a voter, I would not give it 1s. The votes you got were politically inspired, and that is all wrong and is something that should be addressed, at long last, by the management of this site. Negative votes and comments inspired by disagreements in religion, evolution, global warming, politics, the place of zombies in society, etc., should have no place here. That's why more and more contributors are closing down comments. It's cutting the heart out of what should be their purpose: to encourage and help us to be better parodists. As for the cheap, anonymous comment above, it emits enough gas to melt both polar ice caps. Don't be assuaged by its winky emoticon.

@Al. I would have thought my bilingual puns, the subbing of "wetting wrings" for the OS's sappy "wedding rings", the send-up of politicos who opt for obfuscation etc might have struck you as adding some humor sarcasm and irony to this homage-parody. Unlike your benign condescension, the prior critique borders on offensive disparagement; but we Canucks are generally big-hearted, and "eh" 's gripe seems to be mostly with those who are thoughtful and evidence-based.

Sorry I didn't catch on to "wetting wrings" and the rest. Hearing the OS for the first time, I did my best but I'm often defeated by subtlety. Far from being condescending, I reserve my amateurish comments and expenditure of time for parodies which show care and effort. Unlike many commentators around here, I try to avoid ideological debates, preferring instead to write candidly of the parody's qualities, while keeping in mind that the author is proud and sensitive about his work. By the way, I was somewhat surprised that you had no comment for my "Cool Vodka" of Oct. 7.

Have to agree with "Eh". In the family we concede that Giorgio is a master wordsmith, but he can be a bit of a pedant, and his singing voice isn't that great. His track record at returning borrowed DVDs is abysmal. 111.
