Song Parodies -> "Cello, Harp & Violin..."

Original Song Title:

"The Sound of Silence"

Original Performer:

Simon & Garfunkel

Parody Song Title:

"Cello, Harp & Violin..."

Parody Written by:

Leo Jay

The Lyrics

cello, harp and violin,
in conversation with the winds;
and as a piccolo begins weeping,
a soprano very sweetly sings;
and their mission: to entrance and to entrain
heart and brain
in a profound alliance

then all at once, you hear the tone
of a sorrowful trombone;
as the maestro stands in firm command,
and shapes the music with expressive hands,
feel the rise and fall as the crash of a cymbal dies,
and realize
it's a profound alliance

then, as dictated by the score,
violas venture to the fore
while the oboes all begin bleating
at the violins with purring strings;
and a sound that's strong and joyous fills the air
like a prayer
for a profound alliance

mournful winds begin to blow:
the bassoon and saxophone;
cymbals selflessly remain subdued;
timid timpani dare not intrude;
then the sound at once begins to swell;
ringing... like a bell:
alliance

timpani begin to play
and crescendo to forte;
as its resonance begins roaring,
and the orchestra begins soaring,
a sub-lime and pro-found in-vi-ta-tion
rings out be-yond the con-cert hall --
-- can you hear it call --
beckoning... a profound alliance

Wonderfully structured and very moving...just like a concerto. 555
John Barry - June 08, 2005 - Report this comment
Wonderfully poetic. I'm sending it to my wife, who plays oboe in several orchestras, to pass around.
Arwen - June 08, 2005 - Report this comment
This parody honestly paints one of the most vivid pictures in my mind...and really is quite moving. I loved it! And it's the perfect OS, too. Just absolutely brilliant...=)

Wow, that was as good as the original! This was like watching Disneys 'Fantasia' except with my ears instead of my eyes.

This one has a lot of heart. Good job.

Bravo! You've conducted a most memorable parody, here...

Nice Leo. I know you were struggling with this a bit on the pacing irregularaties you mentioned a while back, but this was orchestrated well. 555.
Dee Range - June 08, 2005 - Report this comment
Astoundingly beautiful. More proof that a parody need not be funny to get high 5's from me. I listened to this more than read it.

[SOTM] Had to go upstairs and rake my mam's old S&G LPs from out of the cupboard, but it was worth the effort... this was really good 555

(SOTM) Still excellent Leo.

SOTM--this one still makes me smile...it's just so visual...I can't get over it. GREAT job!
Agrimorfee - July 11, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) Wow, this is totally unlike anything I read of yours. Reads more like an Adagio work (it's no wonder she loved it and commented first). Was there a certain piece you had in mind when you wrote it?
Mike (Mike Armstrong) - July 13, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) Very nice, you should be proud of this one
Charlie Decker - July 13, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) You've come a long way from "Ho, Pay Me!" (one of my top 5 favorite parodies on the site, by the way). This is splendid. It reads like something that could be published, and not as a parody. Wonderful!
Dr. Bob - July 14, 2005 - Report this comment
see, this is why i should have kept with the music lessons. nice job. your high school music teacher would be proud.
Peter Andersson - July 16, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) If the average everyday parody is a Harmonica, then this one is THE Stradivarius of this month! Simply beautiful, goes right into my shortlist.
Dee Range - July 18, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) Simply one of the best parodies on the site, bar none. The sound and visual effects that this invokes is absolutely astounding.
Jeff Reuben - July 22, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) Still excellent, reminds me of the Bugs Bunny cartoon with the musical note. Very well written.
Stuart McArthur - July 26, 2005 - Report this comment
(sotm) already commented - this is the writing of a master
Leo Jay - July 26, 2005 - Report this comment
Wow, thanks again to all for your generous comments (and re-comments!). I have to fake -- er, 'show' my sensitive side once in a while.

BTW, no Ag, I didn't have any particular piece in mind. I started to left-brain it a bit too much at first, obsessing over whether it would make sense to have a cymbal crash so early in a movement, whether it made sense to have a vocal soloist, etc..., but eventually I just surrendered to the notion of creative license.
Agrimorfee - July 27, 2005 - Report this comment
It would be really cool if this was recorded with an arrangement of a full orchestra aping the actions of the lyrics!
Rick C - July 27, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) Very well-written and heartfelt.
Spaff.com - July 27, 2005 - Report this comment
Hilarious! I especially love the part where the girl and chimpanzee pray, throw the dice, and kneel in the parking lot. With Maria Sharapova.

Oops - wrong parody.

You're one of my favorite writers, OJ. This one is dreamy.

(SOTM) Gets my highest compliment --- I wish I'd thought of it first !
Tim Mayfield - July 28, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) My take on orchestra would be a bit more bitter and focused on egos and the like (musicians are so touchy), but you get 5's anyway!
Spaff.com - July 28, 2005 - Report this comment
P.S. I recently had another author PM me to ask if you and I are the same person. It made my day.
Phil Alexander - July 29, 2005 - Report this comment
Nearly missed this one... sweet, very sweet.

PS Spaff - was it this parody?
Oh, give me a home
With a great big bedroam
Where the girl and the chimpanzee play
...oh, sorry, was that supposed to be "pray"?

Yeah, really well-written, dramatic and vivid. Also an excellent example of why voting in this tournament is like comparing apples and oranges. I have trouble comparing this to the other works here, because most of the other works are funny, but then they are TRYING to be funny. This is very visual and vivid, which is what it's TRYING to be. I wonder how many other people here have this same trouble in comparing.
Kristof Robertson - July 31, 2005 - Report this comment
(SOTM) still quite beautiful..
Mikey Squirrel - July 31, 2005 - Report this comment
SOTM.. Very moving piece. Your obvious love of music really shines here. It was like being at a performance. Well done, Leo. 555
