The Lyrics

Charles M. Schulz's "Peanuts" comic strip character Linus Van Pelt's annual Halloween ritual of waiting for The Great Pumpkin reminds me of Samuel Beckett's classic play, "Waiting For Godot" ...
(instrumental intro)

So long
I've been looking so hard, I've been waiting so long

Sometimes I don't know what I would do
If The Great Pumpkin jumped and said "BOO!"

When will Pumpkin come?
When will Pumpkin come?

Halloween Night, so warm and still
I need to know, is my mind just ill?

Maybe I'm wrong
It would kill me if I've been wrong all along
This pumpkin patch has hurt me before
This time, I hope to see more

I've been waiting
For Gourdot, it's true
To rise up in the night

I've been waiting
For Gourdot, it's true
To spread love and delight

I've been waiting
For Pumpkin-news
To make me feel I'm right

Yeah, waiting
For Gourdot, it's true
Ev'ry Halloween night

(instrumental)

I've been good
When Pumpkin comes, it's understood
He'll bring me a truck
Or a wooden sleigh
Make all my dreams come true today

Oh Great Pumpkin, come!
Yeah!
Oh Great Pumpkin, come!

Now in the moonlight
From the moment sun went down 'til deep in the night
There's nowhere on earth that I'd rather be
Than waiting here patiently

I've been waiting
For Gourdot, it's true
To rise up in the night

I've been waiting
For Gourdot, it's true
To bring me toys tonight

I've been waiting
For Pumpkin-news
To prove I'm sane and right

Yeah, waiting
For Gourdot, it's true
Ev'ry Halloween night

(instrumental)

I've been waiting
Pumpkin, for you-u-u!
Oooo!
(I've been waiting, for Gourdot, it's true, I've been waiting)
Oh Great Pumpkin come tonight!
Ahhhhhh!

(fade...)

Kinda sweet, JD - took me a minute to get the "Gourdot" spelling, till I remembered that a gourd is a member of the pumpkin family - nice play on words.

"Pumpkin News!" LOL Johnny! Also very sweet. All in all a frightfully good job.

That was sweet! And thanks for taking a song I despise and making something cute out of it. I can just see Linus sitting in the pumpkin patch, singing this.

"Waiting for Gourdot" has got to be one of the cleverest titles/lines I've ever seen. This is great!

Another comparison with Linus is the long wait many Kate Bush fans have endured for the next album. It was said to be out in September, but it's now September 30 as I write. Business as usual, then!

pickle - c'mon, it's only been 10 years! I just hope that when (if) Kate gets around to putting out a new album, it's more worth the extended wait than "The Red Shoes" was. Or that it's not a 10-year wait for something that never shows...like the Great Pumpkin. --RR (another frustrated KB fan)

I've just had eight months of studying this text in Drama, so can appreciate this one alot. *burdened sigh* Do you give permission for me to use this as related material in final exams in a fortnight? It would be a real laugh, considering we're not expected to have any related material. This parody needs a film clip! Get to it toot-sweet! (lingo from the ingenius Aussie comedy Kath and Kim)

Thanks Luke.

Great pun, kin. I mean well done, brother. Even funnier when you think about Spaff's comment about whether the GP was "subversively allegorical" (never thought about that before).
Johnny D - October 01, 2004 - Report this comment
Thanks, Claude...Spaff's comment is what got me thinking about this topic in the first place.

Still love the Godot/Gourdot thing. And thanx for the shout-out.

Poor Linus, his dreams squashed again. But you've made ours come true.
Johnny D - February 21, 2005 - Report this comment
Thanks Michael. May the Great Pumpkin make all your dreams come true.

One of my song parodies has been selected as a finalist in Boston.Com's Holiday Song Parody Contest!

It's "Waiting For Gourdot, It's True", my parody of Foreigner's "Waiting For A Girl Like You" about Linus waiting for The Great Pumpkin on Halloween.

I entered using my initials "JDS" as my author pen-name for the parody contest.

I ask you for your vote to help me win a pair of theater tickets:
